The Guardians of the Galaxy in Marvel Comics are currently on a mission that seems to have been coming for years, but whether they win or lose, a brand new series is bringing brand new threats when it arrives in January 2020.
We know what you're thinking: didn't Marvel reboot Guardians of the Galaxy in January of 2019, too? They did, recruiting a brand new roster of Guardians heroes from across Marvel's cosmic characters. But during Marvel's "Next Big Thing" panel at New York Comic Con, the publisher announced Al Ewing and Juann Cabal will be dropping Guardians of the Galaxy #1 in the new year, sending the cosmic outlaws into the midst of--you guessed it--an intergalactic war and evil cosmic gods.
The new comes amidst a few different creative shifts among Marvel's biggest books, with Al Ewing known to many readers for his dark horror series The Immortal Hulk. So even if the current storyline, in which Star-Lord's father leads the Universal Church of Truth, seems bleak... things are going to get worse before they get better. As Ewing describes in Marvel's official press release, the Guardians may wish they only had the Church to worry about... once "reborn Dark Gods of Olympus" start to cause them problems:

Juann Cabal (X-23, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man) will be covering the art duties on both interiors and the first cover, which should let fans stop worrying about at least ONE team member. The current series has shown Rocket Raccoon is dying... but with his appearance on the cover of Guardians of the Galaxy #1, he's apparently going to bounce back (and then some).
