Why National Treasure Isn't On Disney+ (& When It Releases)

Now that Disney+ has launched, National Treasure is surprisingly not available to stream, but it will release on the new service in the near future. The 2004 adventure film was a huge box office success for Disney, and the 2007 sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets is in fact available to watch on Disney+. So, why can’t National Treasure fans get all the Nicolas Cage they want and deserve?

Disney+ officially launched on November 12 in the United States, and includes classics from Disney, 20th Century Fox, Lucasfilm, Marvel, National Geographic, and Pixar. The streaming service also has original movie and television content, including the popular launch productions The Mandalorian and Lady and the Tramp. In the future, MCU head Kevin Feige has stated that franchise fans will need to watch upcoming Disney+ series like WandaVision, Loki, and, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to keep up. But although Disney+ has much to offer for movie and television fanatics, some franchises aren’t currently available in their complete form.

National Treasure isn’t available on Disney+ because it’s still part of a streaming deal with Netflix. A search inquiry reveals that there’s no expiration date listed. If a film is scheduled to leave Netflix within 30 days, a date is always listed under the “Details” section.

Unlike searching on Netflix, a Disney+ search fortunately does pinpoint the exact date that National Treasure will be available: April 30, 2020. Disney even allows subscribers to add National Treasure to a watchlist, and a brief note explains why the film isn’t available.

Like National Treasure, the popular Marvel hit Black Panther is also missing from the Disney+ catalogue. In fact, the streaming service is currently missing seven of the 23 MCU films. But the same technicality applies, as Black Panther is currently available at Netflix and won’t move over to Disney+ until March 4, 2020. For now, fans of the National Treasure franchise will have to switch back and forth between services for a proper two-part binge.

When National Treasure does release on Disney+, if fans continue to watch both films, it's certainly possible - though perhaps unlikely - that Disney executives will take note of it and finally move forward with National Treasure 3. It's a sequel that fans have wanted for over a decade now, and something that routinely comes up in conversations with the filmmakers and producers behind the series. Disney+ is already becoming the home to movies that Disney would otherwise not release on the big screen anymore, so it's the perfect place for National Treasure 3. But even if that doesn't happen, fans will be able to soon watch both National Treasure films on Disney+ by springtime.
