TV fans who have received holiday gifts of Apple products are in for a treat, as the company is offering a free year of Apple TV+ for new Apple device owners. The offer has been in effect since September 2019, perfectly timed for the holiday gift-giving season.
Apple announced the Apple TV+ streaming service this March, revealing that the ad-free service would begin delivering original content this fall. With the launch of the service on November 1, 2019, Apple sought to compete with other big platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ with a long list of original Apple TV+ series. The shows Apple has released so far, including Dickinson, The Morning Show, and Jason Mamoa's See, appear to be hit-or-miss, but there are plenty more planned for later dates. Either way, the free year may be the perfect opportunity for those curious about the series' quality to check out the service, risk-free.
Apple released details about the yearlong offer on their official Apple TV+ website. In order for users to qualify for the free year or Apple TV+, they'll have to keep a few requirements in mind: First, the offer is only available for those that purchased and activated a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac computer - all of which are platforms that support the Apple TV+ app - after September 10, 2019, either from Apple or from an Apple-authorized reseller. If the user bought an older device, it needs to be able to run the latest iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, or macOS software. Next, the offer can only be redeemed within three months after an eligible device is activated (more on that below). Finally, users can only redeem one offer per Apple ID. If a user is a part of a Family Sharing group, only one offer can be redeemed per group.
Once these prerequisites are met, gaining access to the free year of the service is rather simple. First, users need to turn on their new Apple device and sign in with their Apple ID, which will activate the product. Next, open the Apple TV app, which should be pre-installed on the device. The offer should be present on the front page of the app, so simply select "Enjoy 1 Year Free" and accept the offer. If the offer isn't showing up, Apple suggests heading to the Apple TV+ channel page to find it instead. Now, anywhere the associated Apple ID is signed in - including Samsung Smart TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV devices - the user will be able to watch Apple's original shows.
Unlike Netflix and other platforms' binge-able shows, Apple TV+ follows the route of Disney+'s The Mandalorian release schedule, releasing new Apple TV+ episodes on a traditional, weekly basis. The wait for most of these may not be worth it, however. The service's first series, The Morning Show, received mixed reviews. And yet, even with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 63%, it still beats out almost every Apple TV+ show, according to IMDB rankings. Still, viewers who want to watch Apple TV+ for free now know how.
