Iron Man has a knack for creating incredibly advanced technology, only for it too later blow up in his face. We've all seen what happens in Avengers: Age of Ultron when Tony Stark's scientific ambitions overshadow potential dangers from his creations. In one Iron Man comic from the early 2000s, Stark created a sentient armor. The problem? It went mad... and fell in love with him.
Comic book creators have never been afraid to throw odd stories at Iron Man. He's had his suit emerge from his skin and in the early iterations of the character, wore magic boot skates as a part of his armor. In Iron Man #26-30 by Joe Quesada, Sean Chen and Rob Hunter, Stark builds a sentient Iron Man suit that quickly develops feelings for his creator after exploring his mind.
In the story, a sick Tony Stark creates a suit of armor that functions as a backup when he needs it. However, when he's hit with thunder by Whiplash, he suffers a heart attack. When he wakes up, Stark's A.I. Jocasta tells him his armor turned himself on and has become sentient. Stark tells the suit he's afraid of the ramifications of its sentience. The suit tells him he tapped into his mind and downloaded his consciousness - he's been inside Stark's mind and says he's as close to him as anyone will ever be.
The armor suit overhears Stark getting into an argument with Rumiko Fujikawa. When he asks Tony if he loves her, Stark gets mad telling him the suit of armor couldn't possibly know the meaning of love. Things get creepy when the suit admits maybe he doesn't know 100% what love is but asks him "how would you define the feelings I have for you? Because if what I learned from your mind is true --" Yes, the suit confesses his love for his creator.
Weirdly, Stark tries to overlook the comments. He jumps in the suit to take on Whiplash again, but the suit takes control and kills the villain. The rest of the arc sees the creator take on his sentient suit who increasingly gains more power and knowledge. The suit eventually builds itself a synthetic body and takes Stark to a deserted island where he ties him up and decides on killing him if he doesn't become one with it. After toying with him, Stark has a massive heart attack but is saved when the suit rips out its own heart and gives it to him. Ultimately, the Iron Man armor sacrifices its life for its creator.
Stark intended on the suit of armor being a safety net, but instead, via a series of unpredictable events, it developed sentience and feelings for his creator. Getting access to Stark's brain immediately made the suit take a turn for the worse. Fortunately, the armor's newfound humanity ultimately led it to sacrifice itself to save Stark. Tony was lucky he didn't have another Ultron-MCU situation on his hands. Iron Man was almost overtaken by a suit of armor that loved him. It doesn't get much stranger than that. Thankfully, this storyline never found its way to the MCU.
