Disney has just announced a massive Blu-ray box set consisting of the nine main films in the Star Wars franchise, and it is now available to pre-order. It has been reported this set will feature a whopping 27 disks and will present the nine-part Skywalker saga in pristine 4K Ultra High Definition–at a hefty price.
This news comes right after the release of the final film in said saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, last Thursday night. With it, the long-running story that George Lucas began back in 1977 is now complete. Disney hopes to capitalize on that with a special set commemorating the descent of Anakin Skywalker from a well-meaning Jedi Knight into the evil Darth Vader, the rise of his son Luke as the hero who reminded him of his lost humanity, and the advent of the scavenger Rey as the one to carry out the legacies of both as the newest champion of the Force. Now, all of these tales will be available to own in a single collection.
Best Buy lists the set at $249.99, with a simple cover consisting of the Death Star from Star Wars: A New Hope against a black background, with the Star Wars logo on the lower-left corner and the words “The Skywalker Saga” on the lower right. However, there's a chance this is just a placeholder image. There’s no word yet on any special features the box set will contain, but it is confirmed that it won’t feature any spin-off films such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story or Solo, only the nine numbered entries in the franchise. Previously, the home video rights to both the original and prequel trilogies were owned by 20th Century Fox, with Disney under contract to acquire said rights to every installment save for Star Wars: A New Hope when the company purchased Star Wars in 2012. Star Wars: A New Hope would remain with Fox indefinitely, an issue that would later be resolved once Disney finalized their purchase of Fox’s entertainment branch earlier this year. The $249 price tag seems rather steep for such a box set, but the collection will likely be padded out with hours upon hours of bonus features and deleted scenes, most likely drawn from the massive backlog of such footage produced over the years. Additionally, it seems strange for the cover to focus primarily on the Death Star, since the massive space station was only featured in one of the mainline films, with only two other Star Wars installments showing similar superweapons. Still, the simplistic image is a striking one.
There are still some unanswered questions about the set, namely which editions of the original three films will be included and if the theatrical releases will be packed in as a bonus, à la the 2006 rerelease. Having these versions may justify the large price tag for a number of fans, as many have been clamoring to see the unaltered versions, including major voices in the franchise like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s JJ Abrams. Until more news of this comes out, Star Wars fans can witness the final movie to come in this set, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in theaters now.
