TLC Producer Reveals Sumit’s Secret Shocked Production

The producers behind the hit TLC franchise, 90 Day Fiancé spoke about some of the most shocking moments in its history. Also, a producer spoke about a secret that shocked the entire staff while filming. On 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way when Jenny found out about Sumit, even the producers didn't see it coming.

Jenny and Sumit were featured on the premiere season of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, where 60-year-old Jenny went to meet her online love, 30-year-old Sumit, in India. Jenny was completely head-over-heels and did not seem to mind the deception of initially being catfished by Sumit as she flew to India fairly quickly to meet him. After deciding on getting married, the couple started living together in an apartment in a different city than Sumit's family, because he said that his family wouldn't agree with their relationship. His family, who believed Sumit was away for a new job in a different city, was starting to unravel Sumit's web of lies. It was revealed that Sumit had been hiding one of the biggest secrets on the franchise and the news even came as a huge surprise to the producers.

The senior vice president of production and development at TLC, Alon Orstein sat down with E! Online to talk about one of the most unexpected moments on the franchise - he also spilled that the moment Jenny found out about Sumit's marriage took everyone by surprise and also a moment that he regrets not being able to have caught on camera. Due to the fact that Cameras aren't able to follow around the cast 24/7, there are things that do get missed, Orstein said,  "I will say for us, and maybe because it's just still fresh in mind, but when we found out that Sumit was married, that really caught us off guard. And I remember vividly where I was in the office when I heard about it and talking about it on the phone with our production partners, Sharp. It was definitely a moment."

The TLC boss explained that they "quickly scrambled a crew" togeterh in order to tell the story. He revealed, "And that definitely was probably one of the most shocking moments, at least in recent memory on the franchise." Fans can remember the episode where Jenny retold the story to the cameras after Sumit's father-in-law knocked on her door and how she found out Simit had a wife. Orstein said, "That's probably one of our biggest regrets, something along those lines." He thought that things may have turned out differently had they had a camera crew in India at the time. He said, "But it's possible it may have played out differently if cameras were there too. I think what the crew was able to capture on the heels of that was very compelling. It happens on a lot of shows, not just 90 Day. When we come in right on the heels of something, we do our best to make sure that we tell the story in a compelling way that still gets viewers insights into what happened and what they might've missed."

Finding out that Sumit was actually married and still in a relationship with Jenny not only shocked audiences and had 90 Day Fiancé fans talking for weeks, it's interesting to see that it came as a surprise to the producers as well. While some fans thought that the production knew about Sumit's marriage, Orstein proved that the show is very much filmed as organically as possible and because of this, they sometimes miss crutial parts of the story.
