Home is a place you can go when it feels like the whole universe is against you, and the New Mutants will soon be putting that to the test in Marvel's X-Men #8 & #9. Instead of a triumphant homecoming with Cannonball in tow, the New Mutants will make it back planetside with a host of unexpected (and apparently unfriendly) guests. The “kids” are home, and they’ve brought all their intergalactic problems home to roost.
The relaunched New Mutants series wasted little time in sending the team far from the shores of paradise into space to team-up with the Starjammers. Led by Sunspot, the team (including Wolfsbane, Mirage, Karma, Magik, and Cypher along with Chamber and Mondo) set out to retrieve their buddy Cannonball. Through Sunspot’s own errors in judgment or just a run of bad luck, the team has experienced less success and more imprisonment and conscription than planned. Maybe, leaving Krakoa was not the smartest move – as backed up by another New Mutant team that almost immediately found trouble outside Krakoa's borders.
However, the solicitation and cover art for X-Men #8 & #9 suggests that returning home might not be the best fit, especially for everyone living in Krakoa. While Sunspot and co. have been facing their own problems in space, the X-Men have been no stranger to conflict at home. While many old enemies have been welcomed into the fold, new issues have already arisen to plague the X-Men (from the strange but dangerous Hordeculture to the requisite inevitable betrayal). As always, there is also more to come for the home team as the new year kicks off. Whether they like it or not, however, the New Mutants' problems are about to be added to their own troubles very soon.
Hickman has been at the writing controls for both series since their relaunch, and the interweaving of both storylines promises to blend the best of both. X-Men will always be the solid foundation of this series family, but right out of the gate, New Mutants proved to be a winning bet by beating out several other X-titles to be a bestseller in November. Even though both series have been separated by quite a bit of space (literally) from the get-go, it seems probable that Hickman has been writing towards this crossover from the beginning. It is also notable that this convergence also comes just in time for Marvel’s big 2020 event, Empyre. Given the timing, the collision of these two series raises a number of questions about how this will affect not only the mutants but the Marvel Universe as a whole.
Anything is possible when this many mutants get together to fight a threat - especially when the threat might just be everyone. (Or maybe just everyone the New Mutants have crossed paths with recently). Promotional materials for New Mutants #1 asked “A trip to space… What could go wrong?” The answer so far has been: quite a bit. But X-Men #8 & #9 seem ready to up the ante by reminding everyone involved that things can always get worse. The tagline, “Get ready to run!” seems about right.
