New concept art for The Eternals offers an up-close look at a Celestial. The film, which will be the second film entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's highly anticipated Phase Four, won't be released until November 6, meaning images and sneak peeks have been few and far between. Set photos have hit the Internet as production continues, allowing fans little glimpses of how characters played by Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden will look. The film's sprawling cast also includes Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Gemma Chan, Kit Harington, Barry Keoghan, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, and Lauren Ridloff.
In the comics, the Eternals are a group of immortal beings who were created by ancient cosmic entities known as the Celestials. They have incredible abilities that allow them to protect humanity from the nefarious Deviants, who were also created by the Celestials. A notable Celestial has already appeared in the MCU: Ego (Kurt Russell) in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. At San Diego Comic-Con, the first real concept art of the Celestials was unveiled, when The Eternals and its cast were officially announced as part of Phase Four. The newly released art, however, offers a closer look at the powerful beings.
As part of a 2020 preview video, Marvel Entertainment showed a fresh image of a Celestial. Whereas Ego looked like a human, it seems like the Celestials seen in The Eternals will have a vastly different appearance, one that sticks closer to their comic counterparts. The Celestial in the image is seen against a backdrop of space, further hinting at the cosmic nature of the film. Check out the new photo below:
This won't be the first time the MCU ventures into deep space for a movie, but The Eternals stands apart from the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor films because of the massive scope of the story. Marvel head Kevin Feige previously revealed that The Eternals will take place over 7,000 years. This is a very ambitious film with a lot of ground to cover, but Feige also reiterated that he sees this film as a risk work taking.
Based on the cast and concept art alone, things look promising for The Eternals. The MCU has a good track record when it comes to its movies, and so far it looks like director Chloé Zhao and her team are doing a good job of honoring the comics. Marvel has often been accused of playing it too safe, but The Eternals presents an opportunity to branch out and try something new. Fans will get a better opportunity to decide how the film looks whenever the first trailer is unveiled. Until then, they can only speculate and get excited about what's to come.
