With The Rise Of Skywalker now released, it marks the end of not only the sequel trilogy but of the Skywalker saga as a whole. The Star Wars franchise is the biggest in the world, and from its first film in 1977 to today, it has been a cultural phenomenon unlike any other. But with the Skywalker saga over, what is next?
With Disney in control, content is being pumped out at a huge rate with lots to come in the Star Wars future. But navigating where to go to follow up the saga which has pretty much been the franchise for 40+ years is a tricky decision and a job Disney has to complete. With stuff like the Obi-Wan series slated already, where else do they go? Here are 10 possible ways how Star Wars could continue after The Rise of Skywalker.
10 PRODUCE MORE NON-FILM CONTENT
There is no point in Disney rushing to create a new film in the next year or so. What would greatly benefit the franchise and the fandom, and would be a good direction to go over the next few years is to focus on producing quality non-movie content such as comics, novels, and video games.
Jedi: Fallen Order was a hit with fans and critics, and more games like that need to be produced. They also need to be produced at a higher rate, something Disney has disappointed with so far. With Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga out this year, hopefully, the two games point to more in the future. As for comics and books, now is a good chance to create readable content that is not created for the sole purpose of connecting to a film, and can be their own great stories.
9 FOCUS ON TV SHOWS
This is something that Star Wars certainly looks like its headed towards. With The Mandalorian, the Obi-Wan show, the Cassian show, and Clone Wars season 7, there is a decent amount of TV content here and coming.
TV shows are a good way for Star Wars to focus in the next few years. Perhaps taking a break from movies all together to let everything flow and breathe, and releasing TV shows to quench the fandom thirst is the best way to go in the coming few years.
8 GIVE CHARACTER STORIES ANOTHER CHANCE
Solo: A Star Wars Story may not have been a massive box office success, or the best Star Wars movie ever. But, it was still a pretty great, fun ride with good performances, harmed by poor marketing and a lack of need. Perhaps Disney should not abandon the stories just yet.
Quickly rushing into a new trilogy may not be of too much use to anybody. Focusing on specific characters and giving them their own stories in Disney+ exclusive films, or even theatre runs in a year or two, may be a thought for the company. There are a plethora of characters who deserve their story told on-screen, and this may be the way and the time to do it.
7 FILL IN THE GAPS
Something Star Wars should venture into with the Skywalker saga over is filling in the gaps of it all. There is a lot of stuff in canon about peoples exploits between, before, and after films, but there is more there.
For one, Darth Plagueis and Palpatine's exploits need to be explored in some way. So too does Maul and Crimson Dawn's rise and fall. Seeing Luke and Lando exploring would be a great story to read or see also. Seeing what went on between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, or between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens could be massively fun shows or movies. There is so much potential across all media to fill in the gaps that the films have.
6 VENTURE INTO THE CRIMINAL UNDERWORLD
The criminal underbelly, which exists across the galaxy is fascinating and has a whole lot of potential. The Mandalorian and other odd pieces have done some exploration of it, but so much more is needed, and it would all make a fantastic watch, read, or play.
The whole Outer Rim Territories are full of savage, lawless systems with the criminality of it all stretching into the lower levels of Coruscant. Seeing smuggling, deals with the Hutts, and bounty hunters, all fleshed out with time and story would be fantastic and fresh for the franchise.
5 MOVE AWAY FROM FORCE USERS IN GENERAL
Building off that idea to a wider and general sense, a good way for Star Wars to continue making movies and to have them be fresh, is to move away from Force users. Not to say they should not appear in say a new trilogy, but they should be far from the main focus.
Let lightsabers perhaps be seen or talked about but have the main character use a blaster. Focus on a group of new characters and create a completely new, changed story that does not focus on light-side vs. dark-side but rather just people, regular people in the Galaxy with a narrative pinning it all together.
4 DELVE INTO THE FORCE
The Force is the thing that binds the galaxy together and connects every living thing. Deriving from minuscule living organisms called midichlorians, not much is known about it, but the Force would be an interesting avenue for Star Wars to explore.
George Lucas intended for his sequel trilogy story to delve into this very concept, examining the microbiotic world as well as the Whills, who communicate with midi-chlorians and that George described as basically being the Force. Disney's canon delving into this would be insane to see, interesting to think about, and a complete change of direction, which may be a good thing.
3 FOCUS ON THE SITH
No Star Wars movie to date has focused on the villain. The Skywalker saga is Anakin and Luke's story, but not Vaders. It is time for Star Wars and Disney to focus on the famous Sith lords of generations passed.
Perhaps a look at the birth of the Sith and its early development or maybe forward to the time of Bane and the rule of two? Maybe a focus on Plageuis' rise and the whole story of James Luceno's terrific novel? No matter what it is, a swerve away from the light, into the dark side of the Force would make for phenomenal viewing, whether a standalone or trilogy.
2 THE DAWN OF THE JEDI
On the flip side, a concept that has not been dived into is the origins and rise of the Jedi. The most famous group in all of Star Wars, keepers of peace and justice, defending democracy and the republic, but where did the order come from?
They have a code, lightsabers, are immensely powerful in the Force, are extremely wise, and have had various iterations of their order. In Legends, their origins have been looked at, but a fascinating concept for films to look at undoubtedly would be the very beginning of the Jedi.
1 THE OLD REPUBLIC
Fans have been clamoring for it. It is an untapped resource in canon and is the singular best way Disney and Lucasfilm should move forward with Star Wars is to venture into the Old Republic.
Base it off of the Knights Of The Old Republic video game and put it in a trilogy and it would be extraordinary. Take stories from the MMORPG The Old Republic and again, you have gold. Simply take foundations from existing Legends stories and create original content and build the Galaxy in that era, and it will work. Having movies, shows, comics, books, and games set in the Old Republic has officially become a need over want.
