The original Broadway cast of Hamilton and Jimmy Fallon team up to help promote the upcoming Disney+ movie adaptation by singing the song "Helpless." Lin-Manuel Miranda not only wrote the music, lyrics, and book for the Tony award-winning hit Broadway musical, but he also performed the leading role until 2016. Hamilton tells the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton as his ambition leads him from being an impetuous soldier to an American hero.
What really made Hamilton so groundbreaking was Miranda's incredible score, the innovative use of rap lyrics, and the fact that the majority of the starring cast were POC. Not only was the show's diverse casting a masterstroke for representation on Broadway, but the catchy songs retold the story of America in a fresh and interesting way. The musical also shined a spotlight on the women who undeniably made an impact on Hamilton's life. From the upbeat track, "The Schuyler Sisters," which introduces Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy to Angelica's incredible solo, "Satisfied," the ladies of Hamilton really get their chance to shine. The character Eliza also has a memorable solo in the musical "Helpless," which comes near the beginning of her arc when she falls in love with Hamilton.
Now, in an attempt to promote Hamilton before it's release on Disney+ on July 3rd, the original cast of Hamilton has virtually reunited to perform the fan-favorite song on The Tonight Show. Joining the Hamilton cast is Fallon himself, as well as The Tonight Show house band, The Roots. The full performance of "Helpless" can be seen in the tweet below:
This isn't the first time the cast has reunited to perform one of the songs from Hamilton, having also performed the show's opening song for a young fan on John Krasinski's web show Some Good News. While the virtual cast reunions have been fun to watch, the Disney+ adaptation is one of their most anticipated titles. Fans who never got a chance to see the show on Broadway will now get a chance to watch the show in its entirety with the original cast on July 3rd when Hamilton premieres on Disney+, making for a perfectly patriotic July 4th weekend in the US.
Hamilton represents the very best of what Broadway can be. Disney+ made a smart move by choosing to release the Hamilton musical adaptation this week, as many people are still stuck at home due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. If there's one thing that's sure to uplift people, it's the power of music and the incredible story of young men and women who helped found a country and make a difference when it seemed impossible.
