Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a spectacular comedy, ranging effortlessly from slapstick to satire. None of the characters, however, are as unbelievable as the one and only Gina Linetti — her life is a fantasy novel in which she happens to be both the hero and the villain.
Gina rarely exposes her real feelings for people (with the notable exception of her childhood best friend, Jake), choosing to disguise them under witty barbs and biting sarcasm. She has done some amazing things for her pals, but also puts them through several unnecessarily harsh experiences.
10 Overrated: Her Sense Of Self-Esteem
To say that Gina Linetti is full of herself would be an understatement. She sees herself as the axis around which the universe is forced to spin, whether it likes it or now. Gina's confidence is refreshing, but it gets tiresome when she constantly refers to herself as a state of mind, or some other nonsense superlative.
When she leaves the nine-nine to pursue her ambitions of becoming a celebrity, she makes a big show of giving the squad their special moments (she only acts like she misses them, but is actually waiting for her gold-esque statute to be delivered.)
9 Underrated: Her Many Life Successes
Gina has the highest accomplishment potential of any character, even though Amy's overpowering drive often steals the show. She has gathered a bunch of devoted followers, known as Ginazon aka the G-Hive (an unmistakable reference to Beyoncé).
Her fans were rabid enough to pressure high-level public departments into action when she was but a Captain's assistant. Now, Gina is a famous internet Life Coach, spreading her inane commandments to her equally inane worshipers. Nevertheless, the fact that she has reached such an advanced professional stage is very impressive.
8 Overrated: Her Dancing Skills
When Holt calls Gina's dancing a "hobby," her feelings are deeply hurt, enough for the squad to realize it almost instantly. Perhaps she should have left it like that, as her ability is mediocre at best (and downright terrible, for the most part).
Consider the notion that her dance groups were named "Floor-gasm" and "Dance-y Reagan." If that isn't cringy enough, her "long goodbye," her final performance that includes a backup team wrapped in gold spandex, goes on for four movements, each an unbearable 45 minutes long.
7 Underrated: Her Unexpected Maturity
Nobody expected Gina to be the most adult of the nine-nine, but when she suggests buying Jake's apartment and renting it out to him, it is revealed that she has always been frugal, and extremely sensible when it comes to financial matters.
She is smart enough to dissuade Jake against taking a risky loan, but her friend is yet to realize that thoughtless actions have horrifying consequences. In the end, Gina accepts Jake's refusal of her offer, but he changes his mind when he gets over the humiliation that she's more mature than he is.
6 Overrated: Her Disinterest In "Low Culture"
In the episode "Boyle-Linetti Wedding," Gina arrogantly pretends not to understand Jake's recognizable pop culture reference: when he calls her Gollum for hounding him about her mother's wedding ring. Barely minutes later, she is on her last nerve trying to prevent the marriage from falling apart (due to Lynn Boyle's last-minute jitters).
Gina convinces Charles' dad that her mother really does love him, regardless of his Boyle-ness, or the fact that he's like a Hobbit. This immediately negates her previous declaration and proves that her horse is not so high, after all.
5 Underrated: Her Friendship With Jake & Holt
Gina and Jake have been close since kindergarten (as were the actors themselves). In fact, it is he who gets her the job interview at the nine-nine in the first place. She has also saved him in the past, for instance, in "The Tattler" episode, although she doesn't quite like to brag about that one for obvious reasons.
Holt plays a role of similar importance in Gina's life, which is shown when she up and transfers with him to the Public Relations Dept. of the NYPD. This deed is borderline sacrificial, and she wouldn't have done such a thing for just anyone.
4 Overrated: Her Friendship With Boyle & Amy
On an entirely different note, Gina takes extra trouble to ensure that Charles Boyle and Amy Santiago have the worst experience dealing with her. Although she does care about them, her general mistreatment of the duo is practically abuse. For instance, she mocks Boyle for almost anything he does and also ruins his ancestral sourdough (after using it to blackmail him).
Amy receives the brunt of Gina's animosity, being verbally ripped to shreds for just being herself. In one case, Gina Tom-Sawyers Amy into replacing her car tires for her under the excuse of teaching her an important life skill.
3 Underrated: Her Black Hole Psyche
In "The Party," Captain Holt invites his officers to a gala at his house, perhaps with a slight degree of hesitation at their "uncouthness." Rosa is given the task of keeping Gina, and her kleptomania, under control — which she does by having her surrounded by a throng of psychologists (Gina probably believes them to be admirers).
She claims that she would "make the perfect American President, based upon my skill set, dance ability, and bloodlust," prompting an awestruck interest in her extremely rare Ego-Id overlap.
2 Overrated: Her Intimidation Skills
Gina is scary, more so than Rosa, Terry, or Amy when she's hypoglycemic. When Holt institutes a series of protocols to convert the nine-nine into an eco-friendly zone, Terry is put in charge of implementing the new rules. This does not apply to Gina, whose dedication to her space heater, the Fornax Radiant Comfort System, known as Jacinta, shows how ridiculously persevering she can be.
She openly defies Terry's orders, even when Jacinta sets her gigantic skirt on fire (forcing him to take the sane road and dousing her with a fire extinguisher). Gina would rather burn down the station than accept she is wrong.
1 Underrated: Basically Batman
It might look like Gina doesn't do any of the work she is assigned (and she really doesn't), but that's because she spends her time amassing her colleagues' embarrassing secrets. This is something that Batman has literally done, storing the Justice League's weaknesses in a protected dossier, with the intention of using it against them in the event of a rebellion.
Gina is aware of the power that information wields, as shown when she makes the Cyber Crimes IT division expand the bandwidth capacity for the nine-nine (by threatening to expose Devin's various indiscretions).
