Rick and Morty's resident goofy dad has often found himself in the thick of some crazy antics and hilarious circumstances. Serving as the whimsical, naive counterpart to the cynical genius that is Rick, Jerry's often a source for the show's wackier, slapstick brand of comedy. It's so coincidence that some of the funniest episodes are those that prominently feature Jerry.
Not only does his dimwitted ways get in into trouble at times, but he often finds himself getting the brunt of some of Rick's experients and escapades gone awry. Because of this, there are more than a few instances where it's easy to feel sorry for poor Jerry. Yet, he's also had some ill-advised and even mean-spirited moments that cause viewers to shake their heads. With that said, let's look at 5 instances where Jerry's antics brought disapproval among fans, along with 5 that made most feel bad for him.
10 Hated Him: Scolding Snuffles
In the episode, "Lawnmower Dog," Jerry scolds and orders Morty's innocent dog Snuffles around quite a bit. He reprimands him when urinating on the rug, even rubbing his face in it and belittling him.
Given the way he treats this naive pup, one can almost understand when Snuffles revolts after being fastened to his intelligence-boosting helmet. As Rick establishes, Jerry is clearly treating the dog like this to feel superior, which makes this behavior all the more repellent.
9 Felt Bad For Him: Almost Getting Eaten By An Alien Creature
Jerry doesn't often embark on adventures with Rick - usually remaining in the safety of his home on earth. Yet, the few times he does usually end up with Jerry falling into danger and/or getting knocked around in some way by the often hostile, dangerous happenings of the universe.
A prime example is the "Whirly Dirly Conspiracy," which features Jerry nearly getting eaten alive by both a giant snake and a strange and deadly alien creature. What's worse is that Rick almost allows this to be seen to completion - using Jerry as bait and only reluctantly saving him. It's perhaps a bit more forgivable since Jerry had attempted to get Rick killed in the same episode, but it's a pretty harsh retaliation on Rick's part.
8 Hated Him: His Meeseeks Fiasco
As the Meeseeks themselves put it - they're not born into this world, and merely exist for a single purpose of fulfilling a specific wish. After their endeavor is successful, they can vanish into peaceful nothingness. Unfortunately for Jerry's Meeseeks - and the army of Meeseeks spawned later - Jerry's mediocrity drives them to madness.
Despite a seemingly-simple goal to shave a couple of strokes off his golf swing, an incompetent Jerry just can't pull this off, even after much advice from the Meeseeks. He indirectly causes a deadly hostage situation at a restaurant after giving up on this golf pursuit, leaving the Meeseeks to stew in a hopeless rage.
7 Felt Bad For Him: Finding Out His Award Accomplishment Is A Simulation
Morty's dad doesn't see many moments of triumph or success in the show - which is in contrast to the nearly god-like Rick. Given these conditions, it's tough not to feel bad for Jerry when his life is "finally complete," as he says, upon accepting his fake "Appley" award inside his fake, alien simulation of a world.
While it's certainly funny to see the rug yanked from under him during this historic Jerry moment, it's also oddly heartbreaking. This is compounded at the end of the episode when his actual pitch for his uninspired "hungry for apples" campaign quickly gets shot down by the company heads.
6 Hated Him: Threatening The Doctors In The Alien Hospital
One could make the argument that, at least in the beginning of "Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate," Jerry's put in a tough and awkward spot that makes him sympathetic. After all, he's apparently doing serious damage to an entire alien society if he doesn't donate his penis... Still, he tends to take things too far when he becomes more infatuated by the idea of being an admired hero.
He ultimately bursts into a hospital room and threatens the very alien doctors that saved him after consuming mutant bacteria; no-doubt leading to some face-palming from viewers. While the weapon he wields turns out to be a robotic penis rather than a gun, it's really the principle of this that puts an unhinged Jerry in an ugly light here...
5 Felt Bad For Him: Losing His Job With The Galactic Government
It seems to somewhat be a pattern that Jerry gets vindicated or gains success in some way, only to have it all snatched away from him - sometimes in mere moments. This is certainly the case in the opening episode of season 3, which sees Jerry having a cushy job for the Galactic Federation. It's so good that he's apparently able to get promotions without even being aware of what it is he does.
One can't help but feel a bit bad for him though - following the government descending into chaos and seeing Jerry literally crawl back to his family, jobless yet again.
4 Hated Him: Making Fun Of Morty In Front Of The Plutonians
"Something Ricked This Way Comes" provides an amusing revelation that Pluto losing its planetary status actually stems from a grand Plutonian conspiracy. The falls tag creates a cover that allows major corporations to mine plutonium from the planet's core, causing it to shrink while the public is oblivious.
Jerry not only decides to go along with this plot - again, to be vindicated - but he takes this one step further by deflecting Morty, who calls him out. He does this by essentially making fun of his own son in front of a large group of chuckling Plutonians. Stay classy, Jerry!
3 Felt Bad For Him: Parting Ways With Doofus Rick
Despite his wacky demeanor, it's tough to see this lovable "doofus" version of Rick leave after becoming close to a similarly-naive Jerry. While they may be silly, their activities together are oddly endearing, as their bond grows and become friends.
This makes it all the more brutal when Doofus Rick ends up parting ways with him to return home, clearly making Jerry sad. Not only this but, to add insult to injury, Rick quickly catches wind of this and makes fun of his downtrodden, punching bag of a son-in-law.
2 Hated Him: Trying To Have Rick Assassinated
Rick and Jerry certainly have their share of conflict, so it's not too surprising to see them belittle and even sabotage one-another at times. Still, Morty's dad takes this a bit too far in "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy," which sees him partake in an alien plot to assassinate Rick.
This would be bad enough - but he also attempts this while Rick's actually being nice to him, getting Jerry out of his depressing apartment, and bringing some excitement to his life. Even if he soon regrets his role in this sinister plot, he still very nearly got Morty's grandfather killed.
1 Felt Bad For Him: His Post-Divorce Life
It's established early on in the show that Beth and Jerry have their share of problems, and their marriage always seems to be hanging by a thread. This thread finally snaps, however, at the beginning of season 3. This divorce quickly sends Jerry spiraling into a life of drudgery, hopelessness, and depression.
It's pretty harsh to see him wallow in misery in his dumpy apartment, microwaving bland food, and weeping for his family. He even gets called a loser by the wind - and is forced to give his unemployment check to a wolf, who apparently seeks nourishment from Jerry's suffering.
