Series finale. These are words that fans of a TV show dread to hear, the sign of the end of an era, of a show that they've come to love. Once the words are out, though, there's no stopping the end, leaving fans hoping that the main characters will get a happily ever after.
In the case of Better Call Saul, that's easier said than done. While Saul has gone through so much, the world that Saul thrives in isn't known for its cheerful finales. Here are five ways Saul deserves a happy ending and five ways he doesn’t.
10 Deserves: Terrible Defeats
Usually, when filmmakers wish to create a protagonist that audiences can relate to or care for in some respect, they will typically put them through difficult and challenging situations, pushing them to their limits until the very end.
With Saul, audiences and fans have watched him and his former self, Jimmy McGill, suffer one defeat and challenge after another, being pushed to the breaking point. As such, Saul needs a win at the end, a happy ending that will make up for all his losses.
9 Doesn’t: Dark Victories
While Saul has suffered multiple loses and defeats over the past five seasons, they aren’t the only things he experienced. Fans have seen Saul pull himself up and bully his way through his problems, to a victory he doesn’t deserve.
These dark victories that Saul achieves derive from his scams or double-crossing nature. It would be somewhat satisfying, even for fans, to see Saul get what’s coming to him at the end, and all his schemes and double-crosses come back to haunt him, leaving him defeated.
8 Deserves: Marriage With Kim
It goes without saying that TV shows are meant to surprise audiences by doing the unexpected or having the characters commit to actions that aren’t in their nature. For fans of Better Call Saul, the unexpected moment arrived when Saul married his friend Kim.
While an uplifting moment for many fans, others fear the time when Saul will leave Kim and their marriage will fall apart, and yet, it doesn’t have to. Given that Better Call Saul is a prequel, the marriage of Saul and Kim could remain intact.
7 Doesn’t: Gene Flashforwards
Ever since Better Call Saul began, fans have been teased with glimpses of Sauls's life after both the events of the prequel and its predecessor, Breaking Bad. These brief flashes of Saul living in hiding are a sign that his ending may already be set in stone.
With his fate already set, Saul could continue to spiral further as Gene, eventually imploding and finding himself in a fate worse than death. Whether that be in prison, stranded in a desert, or something far worse, only the flash-forwards will tell.
6 Deserves: Commercials
If there’s one thing that has made Saul Goodman a popular figure of the Breaking Bad universe, it’s his commercials. Flamboyant and over the top, they are seen as a tacky method for Saul to draw in customers, and yet, they could his way into the sunset.
Saul’s over the top commercials could be what pushes his career as a sleazy lawyer into orbit, gaining enough traction to garner the attention of high-end customers and give him the career he always dreamed of and craved.
5 Doesn’t: Lalo
Monkey wrenches come in all sorts of forms in shows, ways that can clog up the works and destroy the most perfectly laid plans and endings. In this case, the psychotic Lalo Salamanca could end up being the monkey wrench that ruins Saul’s ending.
When audiences first meet Saul in Breaking Bad, he assumes that Walter and Jesse were sent by Lalo for unknown reasons. Given the epic cliffhanger ending that season 5 provided, Lalo could lash out at Saul in the near future, with disastrous and fatal consequences.
4 Deserves: Own Law Office
Whether they be in a movie or a show, fictional characters carry with them goals and dreams that they strive to fulfill. For Saul Goodman, it’s the goal of opening and owning his own prestigious law firm, a dream he’s been attempting to fulfill since season 1.
Given his future, this could be Saul’s happy ending, with the prequel wrapping up on Saul settling down in his own firm in Albuquerque and fulfilling his life long quest. With that, Saul’s journey in the prequel could come to a close.
3 Doesn’t: Pollos Hermanos
The world of Breaking Bad is not a place for heroes but instead a place where villains and evil thrives, where even the most honest men can fall victim. Despite its name, Pollos Hermanos is one of the more vile places in Breaking Bad and a pit Saul could fall into.
Fans have already seen it’s villainous owner, Gus Fring, in action and know how far his reach can be. Given Saul’s future, it’s quite possible the prequel could conclude with him tumbling down into Gus Fring’s clutches.
2 Deserves: Future As Goodman
Every life, fictional and real, has ups and downs, as is the nature of said life. Despite this, there’s always room for victories and wins, and for Saul Goodman, no victory would be sweeter than ending up as Saul Goodman.
When audiences first started Better Call Saul, they were introduced to Jimmy McGill, a down on his luck lawyer going nowhere. As the show progressed, fans watched as Jimmy slowly changed into Saul, a transformation that should be completed in a heroic fashion, with Saul ultimately earning his new future.
1 Doesn’t: Future With Walter
There’s one word any fan of either Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul fears more than anything. A name that strikes fear into their hearts and makes them quiver in their socks. The name of Heisenberg, a name so deadly, it destroys anyone who hears it.
In Breaking Bad, Saul becomes a victim of Heisenberg, his business floundering, his life falling to pieces and hiding out as Gene. As it stands, Better Call Saul should end with a glimpse into that and not with Saul riding off into the sunset.
