Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has exploded in popularity since its release, garnering fan attention as well as brand attention that's resulted in a competition challenging brands to donate to charity in exchange for an in-game skin based on the winner. Fall Guys' early success seems to have taken even developer Mediatonic by surprise, with an influx of players leading to server problems even as it catapulted the game to fame.
Since its release, Fall Guys has dominated sales charts and been overwhelmingly embraced by streamers and brands alike. The game takes the battle royale scenario used by games like Fortnite and generally makes things a lot cuter, a lot bouncier, and somehow more chaotic. The game has a very simple character design that can be expanded upon in thousands of different ways with the addition of accessories and skins, and brands have immediately piled on with proposals for their own. Publisher Devolver Digital has been overwhelmed with requests from brands to get marketing materials into the game.
The Fall Guys Twitter account made note of the deluge of brand requests and put the onus on brands to prove themselves worthy of being marketed in the game in what it's referring to as a "battle of the brands." In order to win the prize of having an in-game branded skin, companies are being asked to pledge a donation to SpecialEffect, a UK-based charity that helps develop technology and fund tools for disabled gamers. In followup tweets, Fall Guys indicated that the brand with the highest pledged donation after two weeks will win a branded Fall Guys skin for the game. Fall Guys also tagged several brands that could be potential donors, including KFC and Chuck E. Cheese.
Some of the brands tagged have already expressed interest in collaborating with Fall Guys on social media, and the simple character design makes the possibilities for brand collaborations pretty limitless. That said, there's also something incredibly heartwarming about the choice to use the game's massive popularity to support a good cause. With many game studios making strides toward accessibility in gaming, hopefully other developers will follow the example set by Fall Guys and not only support in-game accessibility, but also charities like SpecialEffect that support good causes in the gaming community.
The brands that are currently in the running for the top slot have pledged upwards of $100,000 for SpecialEffect and some have even released the designs that could feature in the game. Hopefully, the momentum for donations won't stop in the next two weeks and SpecialEffect can see some truly incredible amounts coming its way. With so much interest, it's possible Fall Guys might offer more slots to the highest bidders.
