Nightmare Before Christmas Characters, Ranked By Their Likability

What's this? The Nightmare Before Christmas is an incredibly popular movie which features some amazing songs, a brilliant story, and a real variety of characters that are all full of personality and life. While the debate over whether the film is a Halloween or Christmas movie will rage on forever, there is also an argument to be had over which of the characters are the most likable.

While technically all the characters are quite spooky and are meant to be as scary as possible due to the fact they live in Halloween Town, they aren't all bad people. They're all over the top and very distinctive, but some are certainly easier to love than others.

8 Dr. Finkelstein

Of all the main characters in Nightmare Before Christmas, the least likable is certainly Dr. Finkelstein. He's a very needy character who is low on self-confidence and he takes that out on others, particularly Sally. While he's clearly very smart, he doesn't treat people kindly and that makes him quite unlikable.

Out of all the characters, he is the one who comes across as the one who is truly nasty, as he doesn't care about anybody other than himself. Finkelstein wants to keep Sally trapped with him so he has to do nothing, and the laziness doesn't help with how unlikable he is.

7 Lock, Shock, & Barrel

Lock, Shock, and Barrel are all easy to group together as characters, as the three children spend all their time as a trio causing issues for everyone with their mischievous behavior. The 'Boogie Boys' are typical trick or treaters and they just want to cause havoc, and they happily go against Jack Skellington's plans.

They are still a lot of fun though, simply because of the energy they have and how they bounce off each other. They're giddy and cheeky and full of sass, having no problem talking back to other characters in order to get their opinions across.

6 Mayor

The Mayor is an over the top character who simply loves everything Halloween. He has a clear split personality which he showcases through his face changes, and his over the top behavior makes him a very funny person at points in the film.

He's only a supporting character, but he certainly is memorable and he can be very likable. He clearly cares a lot about Jack as he is panicked when he is gone, but there is also obviously a selfish motive behind that in the sense that he wants Jack around in order to create the best Halloween possible, which is why he's not the most likable of people.

5 Santa

It's hard to not like Santa, after all, he is the epitome of niceness. That tends to be the case in almost every movie adaptation of this person and that doesn't change in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Even though the film might be spooky at times, Santa is very much still Santa.

Even when he's been kidnapped and messed around by Oogie Boogie, he still comes in to save the day at the very end and manages to maintain his jolly attitude for the most part. He is a little grumpy at points, but given the circumstances it is understandable, but he's just not shown enough to be the most likable character here.

4 Zero

Zero might not be able to talk, but this ghost dog is the best boy possible. Zero is incredibly loyal to Jack Skellington and that instantly makes him a likable character, because he is always there for his friend and he tries to be as helpful as possible.

He showcases all of his personality through his actions, and that is why Zero is so fun. He has a lot of energy and is always around in a playful manner, which makes him very easy to like. Plus, who doesn't love Zero as he tries to be Rudolph?

3 Oogie Boogie

Oogie Boogie is technically supposed to be one of the scariest characters within Nightmare Before Christmas, but he ends up being one of the most likable. He's not in the film as long as others, but he certainly makes his mark with arguably the best song in the movie.

He's full of personality and swagger with his gambling addiction and desire to torment Santa. Oogie Boogie just ends up being someone that people love to see, and that's because he's so fun, despite the fact he is also so evil.

2 Sally

Sally is an incredibly sweet and kind character who is very easy to like throughout the film. She is someone who is patched together countless times and not treated very well by people outside of Jack, but she is always kind to people, trying to make others happy.

Sally is thoughtful and tries to bring the best out of others, particularly Jack. But she is also very smart and cunning, which is shown by how she constantly tries to get one over on her creator, Dr. Finkelstein, which makes her a really likable and compelling character.

1 Jack Skellington

There was never any doubt that Jack Skellington is the most likable character within the movie. He's the lead role and someone who is (ironically) absolutely full of life. He bursts onto the screen and has a non-stop energy that makes him really exciting whenever he's around.

While he can be scary if he wants, the fact Jack is the one person in the movie who recognizes that he can be more is very respectable. Even though he almost ruins Christmas, he doesn't do it to be nasty or scary, he simply just tries his best and that's why he's become so popular and iconic over the years.
