Wonder Woman is The Last Hero Alive At The End of DC's Universe

Warning: contains spoilers for Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #2

The DC Universe is no stranger to the apocalypse. No matter how close to the brink of destruction things get, there's always a hero to stand up and save the day. But everything ends eventually, even the DC Universe and at the end of everything, only one hero will be left to witness the end of everything. Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #2 reveals that the last living soul in the DC Universe is Wonder Woman, and her journey is heartbreaking.

Taking place more than 100,000 years ahead of the present, Immortal Wonder Woman is the very last comic in Future State's timeline. The new comic from writers Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad as well as artist Jen Bartel, sees a destructive force known as the Undoing devouring every bit of the universe they can. The creatures make their way through planets like New Genesis and Apokolips, leaving the only survivor none other than Darkseid. Wanting to end his life the way he lived it, Darkseid decides that the only thing left for him to do is to fly to earth to try and defeat its heroes one last time. Superman and Wonder Woman try to fight the Lord of Apokolips, but he is too strong even for the both of them. He almost kills Diana, but in one last act of heroism, Clark saves Diana, leaving her to roam the dying universe. For centuries, Wonder Woman loses all hope. Though she thinks she is the universe's last living person, she inevitably comes across one last glimmer of light.

Even though the light is terminating from Brainiac's ship, Diana rushes towards it, professing that it doesn't matter if Brainiac was a villain or not, she's just happy to have someone else. It's not Brainiac who resides in his ship though. At the universe's end, Wonder Woman finds the universe's only other soul, DC's most powerful hero, Spectre. He had survived up until that point only because of curiosity. He had sensed there was one other soul left in the universe and wanted to see who it was. With that question answered, he can finally pass on, leaving Diana completely and utterly alone. When the Undoing come for her, she offers one last fight back. It's a fight she can't possibly win, but it's not winning or losing that matters to her anymore. With one last clang of her bracers, Wonder Woman unleashes an attack powerful enough to trigger a new big bang, bringing light to a new universe.

Though the far future is no stranger to DC continuity, this is the first time readers have seen one where Diana isn't just alive but is arguably the most important character. Superman and Batman both survived far into DC's future in the series Superman & Batman Generations while the omnipotent gilded Superman was an important part of DC One Million. Subtextually, stories like this aren't really about the logistics of which character will or won't survive, but are instead about the durability of their legacy in the real world. When a writer has Superman survive far into the future, they're not just saying that Superman, as a concept, will survive far into the future, but that they deserve to survive far into the future.

That's why it's so important for DC to have Diana specifically be the last living hero of Future State. Though far from an underrated hero, she doesn't receive the same respect that Batman and Superman do. Both of those heroes have incredibly thoughtful and well-received alternate universe stories that examine the core of the characters, but up until Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, this hasn't really been true for Diana. With Immortal Wonder Woman, DC is finally giving Wonder Woman her time to shine.
