The Serpent: Dominique True Story and Updates, Explained

The Serpent episode 3 centers on the story of Dominique Renelleau, one of Charles Sobhraj’s victims who managed to escape — but what happened to the real Dominique? In The Serpent, Renelleau is a guest of Sobhraj and his girlfriend, Marie Andreé Leclerc. Like many of Sobhraj’s victims, Renelleau meets the serial killer while on vacation.

In The Serpent, Sobhraj pretends to befriend Renelleau while secretly poisoning him. Convincing Renelleau that he’s suffering from dysentery, Sobhraj brings him back to the home he shares with Leclerc. In the guise of nursing him back to health, they offer to let Renelleau stay with them while they take care of him. In reality, they continue to poison Renelleau once he becomes their guest.

The young French traveler played by Fabien Frankel in the Netflix series is based on a real person, and a lot of what is seen in The Serpent actually happened to Renelleau in real life. The Serpent creators were able to track down the real Renelleau while doing research for the series, and they developed the character based on the man himself. Here’s what happened to Dominque Renelleau in real life after he left Thailand.

Like the character who portrays him in The Serpent, Renelleau really did escape with the help of his neighbors Nadine and Remi Gires. He returned home to France as shown in the final moments of The Serpent episode 3. And in real life, Nadine Gires continued to deny any knowledge of his whereabouts after he left Thailand. Renellau wasn’t alone when he left: Two others were living in the Bangkok apartment at the time and they escaped along with him. In her interview with the Daily Mirror, Nadine Gires recalled the incident after the fact, when Sobhraj questioned her about Renelleau and the others:

“It was terrible. I was waiting in a hotel lobby when they came up behind me and said, ‘Surprise!’ My heart jumped. They offered me a ride home and I had to get into a very small lift with them... I was sure Charles could hear my heart beating. He kept asking, where is Dominique."

Safely back in France, Renelleau began his new life there. He met his wife, Therese, and became a father. He now has two grown-up children of his own. In an interview with The Sun, friends of Renelleau stated that the survivor doesn’t talk much about his experience with the serial killer, Charles Sobhraj, but he does remember Nadine and Remi Gires and what they did for him. “It had been a very scary time for him,” says one friend, speaking about Renelleau. "He thought he would die and he was eternally grateful to the people that helped save him and get him out of Thailand." According to the interview, Renelleau is now the treasurer of the local billiards club in his hometown, where he organizes billiards competitions and is said to take the role very seriously.

Though he rarely talks about Charles Sobhraj and what happened to him all those years ago, Renelleau has spoken briefly about his experiences in the past, shedding some light on what it was really like for him during those months in Bangkok. In The Serpent, Sobhraj is alone when he meets the unsuspecting traveler and brings him back to Leclerc at their apartment. In reality, Renelleau recalls how he met the couple together, and they invited him to dinner. Two days later, Renellau says he woke up in Bangkok feeling terrible. "I stayed at an apartment they gave me for three months and saw people arriving and disappearing," said Renelleau. "I knew I had to get out of there and fortunately I did."
