Henry Cavill Eyed To Star In Highlander Reboot Movie

Henry Cavill is in talks to star in a remake of Highlander from John Wick director, Chad Stahelski. 1986’s Highlander follows Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), a man born in the Scottish Highlands during the 16th century. After surviving a fatal wound, MacLeod meets the swordsman, Ramírez (Sean Connery), who explains that the pair belong to a race of immortal warriors, ageless and invincible unless beheaded.

MacLeod engages in a centuries-long war to be the last one standing, leading up to an event called the Gathering—where the two remaining immortals, MacLeod and the evil Kurgan (Clancy Brown), fight for the “Prize,” a power that can make them the ruler of Earth. Despite mixed reviews and a lackluster box office reception, Highlander became a cult classic that inspired sequels, television spin-offs, books, and comics; the last live-action adaptation being 2007’s sequel, Highlander: The Source. A big-budget reboot of the franchise with Stahelski attached has been in development for awhile. Now, it may have its MacLeod.

According to Deadline, Cavill is in talks to play a lead role in Stahelski’s Highlander reboot at Lionsgate. Kerry Williamson is said to be penning the script with Neal H. Moritz, Josh Davis producing and Amanda Lewis, Patrick Wachsberger, and Gregory Widen executive producing. The original producer of the first film, Peter Davis, was also attached to the project before his death earlier this year. Cavill seemed to confirm his involvement in an Instagram post expressing his excitement. Check it out below:

It's unknown whether Cavill's character or the Highlander reboot will connect to previous iterations of the beloved property. Cavill has a knack for taking on established characters/franchises with Man of SteelMission: Impossible Impossible – Fallout, Netflix’s Enola Holmes, and The Witcher. The acclaim Cavill has earned playing Geralt of Rivia makes him an obvious frontrunner for Highlander. Taking a cue from Tom Cruise, Cavill has also cultivated a reputation for doing much of his own stuntwork and fight choreography.

It’s unclear when Cavill would be available for another series or film. He already has commitments to The Witcher and Enola Holmes 2, not to mention any future Snyder-Verse projects (fingers crossed). While many assume the Highlander reboot will be a film, Stahelski, who is also attached to numerous films including John Wick 4, hasn’t ruled out the possibility of it becoming a series. The franchise is certainly equipped with the aesthetic, world-building, and lore typical of popular fantasy shows like The Witcher or Game of Thrones. Regardless, it’s not hard to imagine Cavill on a poster featuring Highlander’s iconic tagline: “There can be only one.”
