Steve Martin Responds To Emma Stone’s Planes, Trains & Automobiles Rant

Steve Martin responded to Emma Stone's rendition of his classic rant from Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Emma Stone’s turn as the classic Disney villainess Cruella de Vil opened in theaters this past weekend. While A Quiet Place Part II enjoyed the top spot at the box office, Cruella was right behind, reeling in a moderately successful $26.5 million over the holiday weekend. In the lead-up to the film’s release, Stone appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and delivered a surprisingly word-for-word rendition of Steve Martin's expletive-laced car rental rant from Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Starring Steve Martin and a standout performance from John Candy as a lovable shower curtain ring salesman, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is the fifth film written and directed by the late 1980s auteur John Hughes. The film follows the mismatched duo as they try to get home from business trips in time for Thanksgiving. When his character gets stranded at a St. Louis Airport, Martin delivers one of the most famous profanity-laced tirades in the history of cinema. After Stone’s faithful albeit censored recreation of Martin’s R-rated monologue, Martin is now reacting online.

The Jimmy Kimmel Live Twitter account shared Emma Stone’s take on the iconic Planes, Trains and Automobiles monologue, and the rant went a bit viral, garnering a response from Martin himself. Reluctantly, the actor says he is “honored” the Cruella star knows the entire rant by heart. Watch Emma Stone’s recite the monologue below, followed by Martin’s response:

Stone's word-for-word recitation of Martin’s profanity-filled rant is hilarious in its own right, but it’s even funnier considering that Stone used to watch Hughes’ R-rated comedy over and over as a child. While Easy A was Stone's first leading role, Cruella marks the first time she is the sole star of a bonafide blockbuster. Similarly, Planes, Trains and Automobiles signified a turning point in Hughes’ filmography as well.

After making Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Hughes ventured outside the realm of teen comedies for the first time for a truly R-rated comedy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Last summer, it was reported that Will Smith and Kevin Hart would be teaming up for a remake of Hughes’ classic comedy. Smith and Hart will be starring in the movie, but with Stone's clear passion for the film, she could certainly make a good addition to the cast. That being said, there is no indication that Stone is involved and this is instead just a video of her having some fun during an interview.
