Some of the best movies and TV shows trace back to a stellar book or novel series, and that continues to be the norm in Hollywood. There has been a slew of popular movies in recent years that have their source material in books, and 2021 is no exception. And it may be the tail end of the year, but there are still plenty of books that are getting the on-screen treatment in the upcoming months.
From suspense books to children's books, all sorts of stories are on their way to the screen in the form of Netflix, Peacock, Apple+ and Amazon Prime shows and movies. Some old and some new, these are the latest adaptations that bookworms and cinephiles should look out for.
8 Nightmare Alley - December 17th, 2021
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, this psychological thriller movie is based on the eponymous novel, which was published in 1946. The novel follows a second-rate carnival and the sleazy players involved in the making of the fair.
Hustling, grifting, thievery, salacious schemes, and dangerous seductresses comprise the dark carnival and its sordid behind-the-scenes situation. William Lindsay Gresham, the author of the book, attributes his idea of the book to the conversations he had with an ex-carnival worker, as reported in the introduction to the book itself.
7 Passing - October 29th, 2021
Starring Tessa Thompson, André Holland, Ruth Negga, and Alexander Skarsgård, this movie will be available on Netflix soon. Based on the novel Passing by Nella Larsen, it follows the lives of two black women, Irene and Claire, who reunite in the Harlem Renaissance in the late 1920s.
As Clare infiltrates Irene's home, her family, and her social circle, dark obsessions arise and cause strife. The novel was written in 1929, and the retro black and white feel of the movie is definitely one that will excite audiences.
6 The Lost Daughter - December 17th, 2021
Elena Ferrante's novel gets a stellar cast of the brightest stars, which includes Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Paul Mescal, Ed Harris, and it is directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Another psychological drama movie to be released on Netflix after a limited release in theaters, like the book, it traces the beach escapade of one lady, and how it all goes south when she gets obsessed with another woman and her daughter.
She then has the dark weight of dealing with the memories of her days of early motherhood, which were triggered by this woman and her daughter.
5 The Wheel Of Time - November 19th, 2021
Robert Jordan's The Wheel Of Time is the next fantasy mega TV show to watch out for. It follows a member of a powerful organization of matriarchs who takes five special children from their native village after an attack by dark forces.
One of the children is the Dragon incarnate, an ancient hero and channeler destined to destroy or save the world with his powers. The fantasy series will be available to watch on Amazon Prime.
4 One Of Us Is Lying - October 7th, 2021
Karen M. McManus' young adult thriller is being brought to life by the newer streaming platform, Peacock. Starring Mark McKenna, Marianly Tejada, Cooper van Grootel, Annalisa Cochrane, and Chibuikem Uche, the story is about five students in detention at Bayview High.
One student dies of a fatal allergic reaction, and when the authorities rules that foul play was involved, the other four kids come under heavy investigation to find the killer. There have been several great movies based on young adult novels, and this one looks like a promising series too.
3 A Boy Called Christmas - November 26th, 2021
A cutesy family adventure based on the book of the same name by Matt Haig, this Netflix movie traces the origin story of Father Christmas or Saint Nikolas, when he was a young boy who set off to the North Pole in search of his father.
Christmas movies are always a popular genre, but another reimagining of Santa Claus' beginnings as Father Christmas is always welcome for the festive season.
2 Pachinko - Late 2021
This series is sure to be perfect for lovers of historical family dramas that span decades. Based on the book by Min Jin Lee, Pachinko is an epic saga that follows a Korean family who immigrate to Japan during World War II. The story spans the years from 1883 until 1989.
Apple+ is at the helm of Pachinko the series, which has completed filming and is expected to release in late 2021. The Asian epic focuses on its protagonist Sunja, whose journey to Japan in deep poverty exposes an undercurrent of intolerance towards Koreans in Japan. Her life is entangled with the life of Hansu, a mysterious Korean merchant born into a rich Japanese family, along with a slew of other characters.
1 The Lost Girls - December 2021
The Lost Girls by Laurie Fox is a retelling of the Peter Pan fable but from the perspective of the Darling women. Peter Pan has a hold on these ladies, starting from Wendy's grandmother and then mother.
As Wendy grows up and has a child of her own, Berry, she needs to fight to keep her away from Pan's undue influence on the women and still keep her legacy alive. Several versions of Wendy make an appearance here, and this reimagining seems to be an intriguing one.
