Aquaman 2 Image: Black Manta's Comic Accurate Costume Revealed

A first look has been revealed of the reappearance of the villain Black Manta in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Aquaman 2 will come out on December 17, 2022 and follows Aquaman after assuming the throne of Atlantis. The movie began production in July under the guiding hand of returning director James Wan.

Jason Momoa is confirmed to return as Arthur Curry AKA Aquaman alongside Patrick Wilson as Orm, Amber Heard as Mera, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. It is also believed that the film will feature Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna. New to the cast are Jani Zhao as Stingray, Indya Moore as Karshon, and Vincent Regan replacing Graham McTavish as King Atlan.

At the global live stream fan event DC FanDome 2021, fans were given an opportunity to watch an exclusive behind-the-scenes video for Aquaman 2. Wan revealed that the film will feature the return of Black Manta, still out to for revenge against Aquaman. His costume has been modified to be more comic-accurate. In addition to the new glimpses of Manta, there are new images of Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and more behind the scenes on set. Check out the images below:

In the video, James Wan promises that the film will be an even bigger globetrotting epic. However, that doesn't mean that Aquaman 2 will skimp on the comic relief. According to Jason Momoa, he "giggled" reading the script when he first got it. Everyone in this behind-the-scenes video is putting in their best effort to make the film an even bigger and better spectacle than the first film, which made over a billion dollars in the worldwide box office.

It's interesting how much Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom seems to be putting Black Manta front and center. Although he's certainly not the only villain who will be menacing Aquaman in the film (Indya Moore's Karshon is a hyperintelligent shark who is due to be a bee in Aquaman's bonnet), it's unusual for the villain from one comic book film to be so prominent in its sequel. Rather, it's unusual for the character to reappear without changing allegiance or revealing something new. That said, it's entirely possible for Black Manta to have come over to Aquaman's side by the end of the film, especially if they have to face off against a common enemy, possibly from the titular lost kingdom.
