Marvel Comics has just released a new trailer for its next crossover event Devil's Reign, which will feature the return of Matt Murdock's Daredevil as he calls the Avengers to help him take down Mayor Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin. Marvel's heroes have allowed Kingpin to remain in power for too long in New York, and now the consequences have finally arrived. Despite the city's heroes assembling, it may already be too late, seeing as how Fisk will be unleashing all of his resources against them, including his brand new team of Thunderbolts.
Since the conclusion of 2017's Secret Empire, Wilson Fisk has been Mayor of New York, having leveraged the goodwill he generated while the city was trapped in the Darkforce Dimension to his advantage. Naturally, the Kingpin of Crime almost immediately began using his legitimate seat of power to further his own goals. However, recent events have made Kingpin tired, exhausted by the lack of control he feels whenever the city is attacked, such as in the War of the Realms or the more recent King in Black event, forced to rely on heroes to save the day. Marvel has hinted that a major upset is coming which will push Kingpin beyond his growing frustration and into an epic rage, with Free Comic Book Day 2021: Spider-Man/Venom #1 flashing forward to reveal he plans to slaughter New York's heroes - a plan set to begin in the upcoming Devil's Reign event from writer Chip Zdarksy and artist Marco Checchetto.
Now, Marvel Entertainment has released a brand new trailer for Devil's Reign, seeing Fisk effectively declare war on all of New York's superheroes, outlawing them using the power of his corrupt office. In their place, it looks as though he'll be recruiting an even bigger team of Thunderbolts than he assembled for King in Black, who will likely be empowered to arrest or kill any heroes who resist. Likewise, the trailer reveals that both Matt Murdock's Daredevil and Elektra's will be getting help in their fight, as they're joined by the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, both current Spider-Men, and more. Thanks to the trailer, it appears as though Kingpin will be recruiting an entire paramilitary force to serve as his new Thunderbolts, while also bringing in the likes of Doctor Octopus, Rhino, Taskmaster, Shocker, Whiplash, and more to lead them. Furthermore, this new look at the first issue reveals that almost every New York-based hero will be involved, including more isolated heroes such as Moon Knight and Darkhawk. Even the X-Men will be involved, seeing as how they've recently established a new base of operations in the city.
While Kingpin is bold to assume that he can get away with outlawing superheroes in New York, he has been more or less left alone to gain more and more power. While many heroes have voiced their displeasure and have been angry that Fisk managed to force his way into a seat of power, they couldn't stop him, and Kingpin actually made an attempt to go legitimate (albeit only by pursuing technically legal evil over direct force), delegating his criminal role to Izzy Libris. While it's certainly a tricky position to go after the Mayor of New York, Marvel's heroes could have at least come together to publicly denounce Fisk. Instead, they've essentially allowed the Kingpin to make the first move, and additional teases have revealed that he plans to use their secrets against them. Here's hoping Daredevil, the Avengers, and more of New York's heroes will survive the coming Devil's Reign, and will be able to remove the Kingpin from office once and for all.
