Gossip Girl: One Quote From Each Main Character That Goes Against Their Personality

The characters in Gossip Girl have many iconic quotes that perfectly epitomize the characters who say them - whether it be Blair's infamous one-liners or Chuck's reiteration of his name that quickly became his catchphrase throughout the series. These wealthy residents of New York City's exclusive Upper East Side society never failed to have something to say while romancing or betraying one another.

However, sometimes there are quotes that don't fit with the character who speaks the line. This is mainly due to the surrounding contexts of these lines, or characters having evolved after they spoke these words, but in hindsight, they still seem out of place.

9 Serena Van Der Woodsen: "What He Did With That Power Was Write A Love Letter. Not Just To Me, But All Of Us."

In the last episode of the series, Serena defends Dan with this explanation after the long-awaited reveal of who Gossip Girl was. While it may be expected that Serena would defend Dan in this moment due to their recent reconciliation, this quote seems to erase a lot of Serena's history with the site that spent years tormenting her, and her friends. To have Serena so quickly accept and forgive Dan and then defend him doesn't align with her character and felt like the identity of Gossip Girl, and all that the harmful things they did, wasn't the big revelation it should have been.

8 Blair Waldorf: "I Don't Feel Like I Fit In Anywhere."

Blair is known for her sarcastic, often savage Gossip Girl quotes that perfectly embody her character, yet this one shows a rare moment of vulnerability for her. Throughout the series, Blair is heralded as "Queen B," who has other people fall in line after her, and commands every room she walks into, but season three of the show saw her as an outsider at college. Blair says this line to her mother after promising to bring all of her new college friends to her fashion show and failing dramatically. It's unlike Blair to act so helpless, especially to her mother, and stray away from her usual defiant and self-assured attitude.

7 Chuck Bass: "I Don't Have A Romantic Bone In My Body."

Perhaps this quote would have suited the Chuck Bass seen in the show's earlier seasons, but as his character grew, he proved to be quite the romantic. From the beginning of the show, Chuck was shown to be a narcissistic and selfish character who cared little for other people's feelings.

However, this all changed when he finally admitted to his feelings for Blair at the end of the show's second season. While Chuck has admittedly done some pretty terrible things too, it cannot be denied that he does in fact have a romantic bone in his body - from voting for Blair multiple times to ensure she would be crowned Prom Queen, to flying to Paris just to get her favorite macaroons.

6 Nate Archibald: "Who Wouldn't Want To Be Mayor?"

The last episode of the show flashes forward five years after Gossip Girl's identity is revealed, and details what each character is now up to. Nate is questioned if he is running for Mayor of New York City, to which he replies with this quote. Considering Nate's past with politics, and how much trouble his family caused in the same field of work, it seems completely out of character for Nate to even consider getting involved, let alone run for Mayor. He has witnessed first-hand all of the issues that come with politics, both professionally and personally, so to hear him be so cavalier about this topic contradicts his established personality in a huge way.

5 Dan Humphrey: "That Girl Is Fiercely Strong. Independent. Outspoken. Beautiful. Capable Of Anything."

Dan was a hugely complex character, especially when taking his confusing identity as Gossip Girl into account. His attitude towards his friends was often hard to understand as he constantly changed how he felt towards them throughout the show - especially Blair.

Dan speaks these words to Blair, and, alongside their romantic relationship, they feel out of place for his character, who spent so much of his teenage years resenting her and all that she represented, only to change his entire opinion of her completely. Dan and Blair's relationship was a massive shock to fans and caused divided opinions, particularly due to the fact that the pair stated as enemies, then friends, changed to partners, and then back to enemies again, and thus never felt quite right.

4 Jenny Humphrey: "I Thought I Could Change And I Didn't. So I Think The Best Thing For Me To Do Is Go. And Stay Gone."

Jenny had a notoriously tumultuous time throughout her time on the show, from trying to take down Queen B herself to a shady relationship with Damien Dalgaard. However, she always proved to be tenacious and ambitious in her actions, and oftentimes defied her father and her friends to get what she wanted.

Therefore, this quote feels out of place for her character - to accept defeat and to consider leaving behind her family seemed to be a drastic move for Jenny, and went against her fierce personality. Perhaps it showed growth in her character, but at the time it felt slightly odd for her to so readily give in.

3 Lily Van Der Woodsen: "I Wanted To Be Open To Life And Fearless And Not Always Thinking Three Steps Ahead - And Consequences, And What People Would Say, Or What My Father Would Think."

For a character who cares so much about her reputation, Lily's admission feels off-kilter slightly with her personality. The quote comes from the episode "Valley Girls," which sees Lily as a teenager, who is more carefree and fun than how her older self turned out to be. Lily's words are completely vulnerable and reflective of her life, which in turn are quite contradictory to her character.

Throughout Gossip Girl, Lily was often shown to be a strict and unforgiving mother to Serena and Eric, particularly in how her children looked to her friends and outsiders, and while she appeared more relaxed later on in the show, this quote seems to contradict her usual calculated and often severe personality.

2 Rufus Humphrey: "You Brought This Upon Yourself."

Rufus was usually seen as Gossip Girl's beloved father figure with a strong moral compass, and often guided his friends and family to do the right thing. However, the whole storyline involving his relationship with Ivy showed a different side to his character, and this quote in particular proved to be a departure from the Rufus fans were used to seeing. Rufus says this line to Lily, and after everything the two had been through at the point, his words seem out of place and too mean to be said to someone with whom he shares such a romantic history. While Rufus realizes the error of his ways, the quote still feels out of character.

1 Vanessa Abrams: "You Really Think You're That Much Better Than Me?"

Vanessa's time on the show was often spent on the outside of the elite Upper East Side, where she often begrudged the likes of Blair, Chuck, and Serena, complaining about their inherent wealth and privilege. Seeing Vanessa confront Blair face-to-face was satisfying for fans, but the condescending nature of the question seems to go against everything fans have seen of her character up until this point, and feels as if she neglects her own morals just to squabble with Blair. While Vanessa has always been critical of the main group, seeing her sink to Blair's scheming ways in order to fit in doesn't suit her moral character, and was a turning point in where Vanessa's story arc would eventually lead.
