Spider-Man: 5 Ways Miles Morales Was Best In The Ultimate Universe (& 5 In The Main)

Miles Morales hasn't been around for very long. He made his debut in Marvel Comics in 2011 in Ultimate Fallout #4 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. This miniseries took place in the Marvel Ultimate Universe and in part focused on the fallout of the death of Peter Parker's Spider-Man and the introduction of the new Spider-Man.

However, the Ultimate Marvel Universe eventually died and Miles ended up in the mainstream Earth-616, where both he and Peter Parker served in the role of Spider-Man. There were great moments in Miles Morales' career, both in the Ultimate Universe and the mainstream Marvel world, and strong reasons why he was great in both.

The biggest thing that made Miles Morales great in the Ultimate Marvel Universe was that he was an original character. He was a young teenager who was so different than Peter Parker that he made Spider-Man into his own image.

He had to live up to the name of Spider-Man, but thanks to his family, upbringing, and good heart, Miles turned Spider-Man into an even greater hero than the teenager whom he replaced. Miles deserved everything he earned in the Ultimate line and it never came easy to him.

The one thing that Miles Morales never had in the Ultimate world was Peter Parker. Miles gained his powers before Peter died, but by the time he decided to become a hero, Peter was dead and gone and that allowed Miles to become his own hero. That was a good thing.

However, Peter and Miles have such a fantastic relationship in Marvel Comics now. With Miles in the mainstream universe, he can go to Peter for advice or help, and Peter can come to him when he needs someone to back him up as well. It is a brotherly relationship and one of the best in comics today.

Since Miles Morales didn't have Peter Parker to show him the ropes, things were hit-and-miss at first. When Nick Fury sent Spider-Woman to bring Miles in, he decided that the teenager had something and he began to work on mentoring the teen.

Captain America also ended up working with Miles, although it was a hard sell since Peter died when Cap wouldn't help train him until it was too late. However, Nick Fury was the first one to see potential in Miles and was one of his best allies in the Ultimate Universe.

Miles Morales helped the Ultimates at times in that world, but he was always just a kid whom most heroes looked at either as an inexperienced ally or a detriment. That is not who Miles Morales is in the mainstream Marvel Universe.

In the mainstream Marvel Universe, Miles joined the Avengers with Ms. Marvel and Nova, but the three teenagers quit the team when they realized it was all about fighting world threats and not helping the people. Miles, Marvel, and Nova co-founded the Champions, and all three solidified their place in the Marvel Universe with that team.

While putting Miles Morales in the Champions was the best thing Marvel could have done in the comics, there was something pure about his work as a loner in the Ultimate Universe. In his earlier days, Peter Parker was always by himself, and that helped make him a greater hero down the line.

That is how Miles was in the Ultimate Universe. While he worked briefly with the Ultimates, had Nick Fury take him in, and had Captain America finally agree to train him, it was still Miles against the world in most of his stories and it was a nice throwback to what made Spider-Man awesome in the old days.

Miles Morales had a complicated relationship with his family in the Ultimate Universe. His father hated the idea of Spider-Man working as a vigilante and his mother was dead. His Uncle Aaron, known as Prowler, was one of Miles' most powerful villains, manipulating Spider-Man into doing bad things before dying himself.

In the Marvel mainstream universe, Miles is in a much better place storywise. His father is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent who supports Miles as Spider-Man; Aaron rehabilitated himself and did right by Miles; his mom is also back and Miles has a new baby sibling. Family is one of the most important aspects of Miles Morales' character and it is perfect in the mainstream Marvel world.

One thing that was great about Miles Morales taking on the role as the new Spider-Man was the reaction by Peter Parker's Aunt May and his close friend Gwen Stacy. When Miles was struggling with his doubts about taking on the role, these two characters stepped up for him.

Even when Captain America tried to shut him down, May told Miles to follow his heart and Gwen had less flattering words to say about Captain America. These are two iconic Spider-Man characters who gave Miles their stamp of approval, something that only happened in the Ultimate Universe.

The Ultimate Universe was more realistic when it came to Marvel's stories. They tried to make things a little more dangerous by almost never bringing a person back after they died. They also tried to eliminate a lot of the otherworldly elements. There were moments that defied that, such as Peter Parker from the 616 showing up, but mostly they kept it straight.

With Miles now in the 616, he has teamed up with Spider-Man and became close with Spider-Gwen, who is from Earth-65. This all led to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is all thanks to Marvel bringing Miles into the mainstream Marvel Universe, where he became part of the Spider-Totem.

The purpose of the Ultimate Marvel Universe was to bring the heroes into the new world, updating all their origins. This was done expertly with Spider-Man and when he died, Miles Morales kept bringing in classic Spider-Man villains with all-new looks.

The Prowler became Miles' uncle; the Scorpion became a big muscle-man gangster boss; a new scary version of Venom showed up with Conrad Marcus with an origin tied into Miles' dad. Thanks to the Ultimate Universe, Marvel could reimagine these characters for Miles, something that couldn't happen in the main Marvel Universe.

One thing that Marvel Comics has done well in the 616 is create a new generation of heroes for the future. While the Ultimate Universe tried to recreate characters for modern-day readers, the kids in the 616 are new heroes based on older characters, but ones who found their own place in the world.

Miles Morales as Spider-Man joins Ms. Marvel, the teenage Nova, Amadeus Cho's Brawn, Ironheart, and more as the heroes who will lead the Marvel Universe into the next generation. They are all on solid ground both in the universe and with the readers.
