The New Batman Costume is More Demon Than Superhero | Screen Rant

DC's Future State initiative introduced readers to a brand-new Batman and now its prequel follow-up I Am Batman has revealed a terrifying new suit for the hero. The series explores a possible future of the DC universe where younger heroes take on the mantles of iconic heroes, including Tim "Jace" Fox as the Dark Knight. As the new Caped Crusader, Jace has had a lot of interesting developments, making his own legacy in the Batman mythos.

I Am Batman is written by John Ridley with art by Stephen Segovia and follows Jace's journey from a young man who wants to revolt, to a vigilante who stands as a symbol for revolution as well as resistance. The series serves as a prequel that could possibly lead to the events of Future State: The Next Batman. Jace is the son of longtime Batman colleague Lucius Fox, who was sent away to military academy by his prosperous family and later received some training from Katana. After returning to Gotham and hearing the news of Bruce Wayne's apparent death, Jace decided to take justice into his own hands and become the next Batman.

The latest variant cover revealed for I Am Batman #5 drawn by Francesco Mattina shows an interesting look at Jace's Bat-suit. The cover depicts a demonic-looking Batman staring into the eyes the reader with an almost callous look. The suit has a very dark and technical look compared to what is seen in Segovia's regular art for the series, along with some monstrous red glowing eyes. This issue promises a showdown between Batman and a new breed of Peacekeeper, augmented with technology from the Fox family. It seem the only person who might be able to help Batman and save his life might be the man behind the tech, his father Lucius.

Jace has already proven himself in his fight against the Magistrate, a futuristic police force dedicated to taking down Gotham’s vigilantes. Jace has shown his aptitude for heroics with his impressive fighting skills, Bruce Wayne-like intelligence, and specialized advanced technology from his family. However, now that his battle is in the present, he's fighting a much larger fight, starting with Gotham's systematic issues and corruptive nature. His plan for revolution against these concepts proves to be a tough job, but his efforts are showing that he's more than capable.

Jace Fox is already paving his own unique path as the protector of Gotham's citizens in both the present and potential Future State of the DC universe. His powerful long-term goals for the city show his mission is equally as important as Bruce's. As his journey continues, it seems like Jace will have no issue fitting into his new role as the next Batman. DC's I Am Batman #5 by John Ridley with art by Stephen Segovia will go on sale January 11.
