GTA San Andreas Definitive Edition Mod Fixes Rockstar's Textures

Project: Texture Overhaul is a work-in-progress mod that a PC modder has begun to improve upon the textures in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The GTA Trilogy's myriad glitches have plagued remastered versions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas since the collection launch a couple of weeks ago. These errors range from performance hiccups and graphical bugs to gameplay hitches and everything else in between.

Given the project's generally broken state, players and pundits continue to wonder why Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games would push such a release out the door. It's clear these remasters were not ready for primetime, but at least the latter and developer Grove Street Games are committed to setting things right. One recent report from an industry insider claims Rockstar has even siphoned internal resources to fix GTA Trilogy, a move that could result in updates for GTA Online and Red Dead Online launching later than previously planned.

Nexus Mods user nigeez (via VGC) is currently hard at work on Project: Texture Overhaul, a mod that means to fix the world textures in GTA Trilogy's San Andreas release. The modder's focus lies in improving upon textures that catch the player's attention, rather than enhancing every in-game surface. Nigeez' first release for the work-in-progress mod features 85 brand-new textures in total. Players who download the mod should, thus, spot improvements to the main roads, sand, concrete, and mud. On the mod's 'About' page, the modder also notes that while 90 percent of the textures appear in 4K, this may change sometime down the line to "reduce file size." Check out a few screenshots of the mod's implementation below:

The work done in the mod, so far, is nothing short of impressive and the modder's commitment to expanding their efforts means Project: Texture Overhaul could go a long way in addressing GTA Trilogy's graphical shortcomings. As of writing, it remains to be seen if Rockstar and Grove Street are similiarly working on this level of visual enhancement.

Rockstar formally acknowledged the collection's shortcomings in a statement last week. The studio's statement promised the classic versions of the trilogy would rerelease on the Rockstar Games Launcher, giving PC players a chance to experience the originals while developers focused their efforts on fixing the so-called definitive edition.
