An amazing Halo Infinite Easter egg lets players visit Sesame Street and encounter Oscar the Grouch's disgusting abode. The campaign for the sci-fi shooter is set to release on December 8, but its multiplayer component was recently launched as a free-to-play mode in honor of the franchise's 20-year anniversary. Halo Infinite multiplayer quickly broke Xbox Game Studios records for Steam player counts, demonstrating the franchise's enduring popularity and the excitement surrounding its newest installment.
The Halo series has always put a focus on worldbuilding, with original developer Bungie establishing a massive and fascinating sci-fi universe to explore in subsequent installments. Each subsequent title has expanded the epic saga of Master Chief and his fellow Spartan soldiers, while other media such as novels and short films expand the universe outwards. That said, Halo has never taken itself too seriously, with references and Easter eggs always adding levity to the otherwise somber war-torn setting. The newest title appears to be no exception, as Halo Infinite references were leaked prior to the release of the free multiplayer component. These references include nods to past Halo installments, as well as a very amusing emblem that pays homage to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's infamous 90's turtleneck.
YouTuber xGarbett has now located a Halo Infinite Easter egg which pays homage to Sesame Street's angriest resident, Oscar the Grouch. This adorable reference can be found in the game's Streets map, near the Plaza area. By going down an alley players can find two garbage cans, one of which is opened to reveal a big pile of trash. Observant players will find the mini-map and ping system refer to this open garbage can as "Oscar's House," a clear reference to Sesame Street's iconic green meanie Oscar the Grouch. The closed can is simply referred to as "Plaza," confirming that the open can specifically is the angry muppet's smelly home. Unfortunately, players are currently unable to team up with Oscar to take down hordes of alien monsters.
While the Halo series often includes shout-outs to past installments and different franchises, some Easter eggs in Halo Infinite reference the game's own development. Back in July 2020, a live gameplay demo of Halo Infinite was revealed, leaving fans unimpressed by the game's graphics. One victim of particular criticism was a Brute enemy, nicknamed Craig by gamers, who was mocked for his poor graphical appearance. Halo Infinite's campaign contains Craig memes, poking fun at fan backlash while also demonstrating how far development has come since last year's gameplay presentation.
The free release of Halo Infinite's multiplayer mode was quite unexpected, but fan response to the sci-fi shooter has been positive. While the franchise is held in great reverence by the gaming community, lighthearted Easter eggs add personality and fun to the experience. Oscar's House is a small detail that many players will likely overlook, but it serves as an adorable shout-out to Sesame Street and its beloved garbage digger.
Halo Infinite will launch on December 8, 2021, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Halo Infinite's multiplayer mode is available now.
