New details on the iPhone SE 3's release date have just leaked, and things are looking good for anyone interested in buying Apple's upcoming phone. Whenever a new iPhone comes out, shoppers have been trained to expect a high price. The iPhone 13 mini starts at a hefty $699 retail price, with the iPhone 13 Pro Max going all the way up to $1599 for the most expensive model. If you're buying an iPhone, chances are you'll need to spend a generous amount of money.
That's what makes the iPhone SE series so compelling. The first iPhone SE launched in March 2016 to pretty rave reviews. It featured the iconic iPhone 5 design, vastly upgraded internals, and a compelling $399 MSRP. Apple followed it up a few years later in April 2020 with the iPhone SE 2. The second-gen model introduced better specs and a more modern iPhone 7-inspired design. It brings those upgrades for the same $399 price, retaining the idea of offering a proper iPhone experience without spending an arm and a leg.
Following those two models, Apple's now expected to drop the iPhone SE 3. Rumors of a third-gen iPhone SE have been circulating for a while now, and thanks to a new report from TrendForce, the phone's release date just got much more certain. Per the report, "In terms of product development, Apple is staying with the plan to release its third-generation iPhone SE in 1Q22 and four models under a new series in 2H22." Q1 refers to January 1 thru March 31, indicating the iPhone SE 3 will launch by the end of March at the latest. This lines up with earlier reporting in July where 'industry sources' claimed the iPhone SE 3 was launching in early 2022.
In addition to the Q1 2022 release date, TrendForce also shared details on Apple's production plans for the iPhone SE 3. Specifically, it says iPhone SE 3 production volume is "forecasted to reach 25-30 million units." For context, Apple's expected to produce around 80 million iPhone 13 units by the end of 2021. That looks like a huge difference at first, but considering that 80 million number is separated between four distinct models, that makes the iPhone SE 3's rumored production numbers pretty comparable.
As for what's expected of the iPhone SE 3, it should be very similar to the current iPhone SE 2. The rumor mill indicates it'll have a virtually unchanged design compared to its predecessor. That means another year of large bezels, a home button, and Touch ID. Under the hood, however, the iPhone SE 3 should be touting things like 5G connectivity and a much faster processor.
While all of that sounds good enough, it'll be interesting to see how the iPhone SE 3 stacks up to rising Android competition. The Google Pixel 6 currently retails for $599 and offers a pretty incredible flagship experience — including a 90Hz display, excellent software, years of updates, and outstanding cameras. There are also countless budget options from Motorola, many of which are available for $300 or less. There's no doubt the Apple iPhone SE 3 will be a good phone, but whether or not it can outshine its Android competitors remains to be seen.
