A brand-new Marvel MMO is currently in the works from DC Universe Online developer Dimensional Ink Studio. The House Of Ideas has seen an increase in well-received video game tie-ins over the past few years, from Insomniac’s critically-acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man series to Eidos Montreal’s surprise hit Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy.
This wave of high-quality Marvel video games isn’t slowing down anytime soon either, as 2022 will see the release of the Firaxis Games-developed tactical RPG Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The following year will feature Insomniac’s highly-anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which will be set in the same continuity as the recently announced Marvel’s Wolverine by the same developer. Even former Uncharted creative director Amy Hennig is getting in on the comic book action with an upcoming Marvel game by Skydance New Media. Now, a new report indicates that a Marvel-based Massive Multiplayer Online title is also on the horizon, one that is ironically being developed by the people behind DC Universe Online.
IGN reports that a new Marvel-based MMO was listed in Enad Global 7's Q3 2021 financial report earlier this month, with Dimensional Ink Studio and DC Universe Online lead Jack Emmert attached to develop this currently unnamed project. No further details were shared in Enad Global 7's report, but the company’s description of the Marvel MMO as a “longer-term project” suggests that fans likely won’t see an official unveiling until at least 2023.
Launching back in 2011, DC Universe Online was originally developed by Daybreak Games, but a corporate restructuring caused the company to split off into three separate studios last year. Dimensional Ink Studio was the splinter group in charge of DC Universe Online after this, with CEO Jack Emmert and his crew continuing to provide new content for DC Universe Online to this day. Before entering the DC Universe, Emmert co-founded Cryptic Studios, the developer behind the original superhero MMO City Of Heroes, which lasted from 2004 to 2012.
Interestingly enough, Jack Emmert also worked on a Marvel-based MMO before under Cryptic Studios, but this project was ultimately canceled by Microsoft back in 2008. Rumors have stated that Daybreak Studios was previously working on another Marvel MMO, but this project would also be canceled in 2018 - a move that led to several layoffs. However, with Marvel-based video games becoming increasingly common and popular over the past few years, the third time might just be the charm for Jack Emmert and his team at Dimensional Ink Studio a good decade after it helped bring Marvel’s distinguished competition to the world of MMOs with DC Universe Online.
