A datamine of Shin Megami Tensei V for the Nintendo Switch has hinted that the game could be coming to PlayStation systems and PC in the future. SMT V was one of the first games revealed for the Nintendo Switch in 2017, but it took four years for the game to hit store shelves.
The long-awaited SMT V is a turn-based RPG that is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Tokyo, where demons and angels battle for control of the land. The main character is a high school student, who is given the powers of a fiend, becoming a being known as a Nahobino. This grants him the strength to slay demons, as well as the ability to bind them to his will in order to use them as party members. The player must use these newfound abilities to shape the fate of this new world.
SMT V is a Nintendo Switch exclusive, but it might not stay that way forever. SMT V was listed as coming to PC in the Nvidia Geforce Now game list leak, among other console exclusives, like FF7 Remake. A dataminer may have uncovered further evidence suggesting a future multi-platform release for SMT V. According to Pan-Hime on Twitter (via PCGamesN), SMT V has the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC listed as target platforms within its files. This would also mean that the game would run on PS5, through the console's backward compatibility feature.
SMT V wouldn't be the first Nintendo Switch exclusive to come to other platforms over time. Monster Hunter Rise is coming to PC in 2022, while Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes eventually came to PS4 and PC. SMT 3 Nocturne HD Remaster was also released on these same three platforms. It's fair to say that only games published by Nintendo itself are guaranteed to stay on the Nintendo Switch. The third-party developers and publishers will want their games available on as many systems as possible, and the PC and PlayStation markets are currently bigger than Nintendo's fanbase.
A multi-platform release for SMT V is a good thing, especially as some fans have had issues with the performance of the game on Nintendo Switch. Atlus and Sega promised worldwide releases and multi-platform launches for future games, and a PlayStation/PC release for SMT V would fit as part of that plan. The mainline Persona series has mostly stayed on PlayStation systems, while the mainline Shin Megami Tensei franchise has drifted between Nintendo and Sony over the years. The Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series are tricky to enjoy for people who own a single platform, and these beloved games need as much reach as possible.
Shin Megami Tensei V is available now for Nintendo Switch.
