Thanos Tricked Eros Into Believing He Caused His Greatest Murders

Warning! Spoilers for Eternals (MCU) below!

In the comics, Thanos' love for Death is a defining reason for the character's motivation to snap half of all reality from existence. However, a She-Hulk comic once explained the reason the Mad Titan is infatuated with Death is thanks to his brother Eros. According to Thanos, Starfox used his powers to get him to embrace Death with all of his heart, giving the villain his true purpose in the Marvel Universe. But, it turns out, Thanos was lying.

Eros, otherwise known as Starfox, is Thanos' younger brother in the comics. While his brother was born with the Deviant Gene, which turned him into a monster, Eros was born with a human-like appearance. The son of Mentor and Sui-San, Eros has the power to control other people's emotions, which the antihero has used in many different ways during his adventures. However, Starfox was once put on trial for allegedly using his powers to commit sexual assault. Thanos dropped a bombshell about his brother during the trial, inspiring him to become a monster.

In She-Hulk #12 by Dan Slott, Rick Burchett, Cliff Rathburn, Avalon's Dave Kemp, and Dave Sharpe, Starfox is put on intergalactic trial for misusing his powers. In the trial, Thanos reveals that Starfox previously used his powers in another big way, inspiring his love of Death. In a flashback, Thanos recounts how a young Eros told him to welcome and embrace Death with all of his heart. According to Thanos, Eros influenced him to become the Mad Titan. The admission leads to Starfox not only being found guilty but for him to be held accountable for all of his brother's past crimes.

Fortunately for Starfox, She-Hulk (with the assistance of Moon Dragon) jumps inside Thanos' mind, where she discovers he planted a memory inside Eros and created a duplicate version of himself with the same memory. In doing so, he created false memories that led those who examined both brothers to believe Starfox created the Mad Titan. In addition, Starfox committed the assault after Thanos warped his mind. Finally, Starfox agrees to turn off his powers telepathically and apologize to his victims.

Thanos' plan came extremely close to working, as Eros was nearly punished for all of the crimes he committed. However, in reality, Starfox using his powers to influence Thanos to become a monster was a fake, implanted memory. With Eros now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will be fascinating to see what Eros' relationship with Thanos will be like and whether the pair had a conflict as big as the Mad Titan trying to blame his brother for all of his misdeeds.
