The Bachelorette is the beloved, and widely considered better, spinoff series to The Bachelor. Much like its parent series, The Bachelorette is a reality dating competition series where a group of men vies to win the heart of the titular Bachelorette, who is usually the runner-up or fan-favorite contestant from The Bachelor's previous seasons. Much like The Bachelor, The Bachelorette is a show that thrives on drama.
In its eighteenth season with the new Bachelorette, Michelle Young, The Bachelorette has seen some amazing highs and lows over the years. The true lows of the series, however, are what end up sticking with audiences of the franchise, making for some wild yet memorable moments.
10 Nick Viall Reveals Intimate Details
One of the most controversial contestants in The Bachelorette's history, Nick Viall broke a pretty big rule about the series: what happens in the Fantasy Suite, stays in the Fantasy Suite. Nick, however, did not abide by that rule during the special after the season concluded.
On national TV, he revealed that he and Andi Dorfman slept together in the suite in what many felt was an unnecessary and slut-shaming way. He said, "If you weren’t in love with me, I’m just not sure, like, why you made love with me." That's definitely a betrayal of trust between intimate partners.
9 Brooks Not Love Confession
In season 9 of The Bachelorette, Desiree Hartsock seemed very much into sales rep Brooks Forester. In fact, it looked like Forester was going to win Desiree's heart or was in the front-running for it. Then he blindsided Desiree by, well, telling her that he didn't love her and leaving the series. It took until he was part of the Final Three to tell her that?
Desiree, with her Final Two, accepted a proposal from Chris Siegfried. Rather than the relationship ending off-screen, Chris and Desiree are one of the very rare success stories from the franchise. The couple, as of 2021, is still happily married with two kids.
8 Jen's Rejection
Audiences of The Bachelor franchise tend to remember Brad Womack's rejection of his Final Two in the season 11 finale. The Bachelorette, however, seems to have one-upped The Bachelor in a betrayal that no one really talks about. At the end of her season, Jen Schefft rejected both proposals. She did, however, tell Jerry Merris to keep the ring and ask her again.
Jerry again proposes to Jen during the retrospective and she rejects him. At least Womack committed to his decision rather than stringing someone along.
7 Justin's Girlfriend Back In Canada
In some cases, a contestant on The Bachelorette will end up using their time on the series for free publicity. In the case of Justin "Rated R" Rego, he was using his time on Ali Fedotowsky's season for just that. Rather than do a thorough background check, Justin's girlfriend in Canada seemed to slip past the team on the show until late in the season. This led to Ali confronting Justin.
Of course, when this happened all Justin did was try to hobble away from her to the doors of a locked restaurant. In the end, he was disqualified from the competition.
6 Ashley's Roast
Comedy is a great icebreaker, especially in terms of a date. What's not great, however, is what happened to Ashley Hebert in this disastrous idea during her time on The Bachelorette. In a roast held in her honor, several of the contestants went below the belt in their "jokes" of Ashley, including poking fun of her chest size.
In the end, rather than a lighthearted time, Ashley was in tears with several of her insecurities fully picked over. After the "jokes", she was feeling extremely betrayed by the men who were here to win her love.
5 Kalon's Comments
Emily Maynard is considered to be one of the sweetest and kindest members of the Bachelor Nation. The single mom took the lead in The Bachelorette season 8. Filming for the series even moved to Maynard's hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina so she could be nearby her daughter, who is clearly important to Maynard during her stints on the series. Then Kalon called her child "baggage" in front of the other guys.
Naturally, word got back to Emily, who wised up to the fact that Kalon was a jerk. Emily, furious and betrayed, ended up telling Kalon off, giving a speech about what it's like to be a single mother, and booting him from the show.
4 Frank Quits
Poor Ali Fedotowsky was not having a great season of The Bachelorette. First, she finds out one of the contestants is actually in a relationship and was just using the series for publicity. Then, much like Desiree, when she is down to three contestants, one of them eliminates himself because he's not in love with her. Somehow, Frank Neuschaefer snuck a visit to his ex-girlfriend and realized he was still in love with her.
Ali just couldn't catch a break, but she did up picking Roberto Martinez in the season finale. The two broke off their engagement in November 2011.
3 Clare Ends Her Season Early
The Bachelorette tends to last the whole season before picking her perfect match. Clare Crawley, in season 16, lasted about four episodes before she picked Dale Moss and then left. Clare knew what she wanted, but the guys remaining felt pretty betrayed by her as well. The crew also probably weren't huge fans of having to clean up what remained of the season.
Thankfully, season 16 was saved by replacing Crawley with Tayshia Adams for the rest of the season for her shot at love. Crawley and Adams both broke up with their respective picks.
2 Ian's Just Too Smart For The Show
In The Bachelorette season 11, Ian Thomson decided to quit the show because Kaitlyn Bristowe wasn't "deep" enough for him. He told her this to her face, showing that he wasn't the nice guy that he came across as in front of her. Bristowe was pretty offended by Ian's snobby attitude, who, as he was driving away in the limo, started to angle to take over as The Bachelor.
Ian said, "I'm punished for just being an intellectual." He was not made the next Bachelor.
1 Jed Had A Girlfriend
None of the other men with secret girlfriends or who were actually in love with someone else made it as far as Jed Wyatt did. During Hannah Brown's run as The Bachelorette, the sing-songwriter won the season, except he wasn't there for Hannah. he was there to further his music career. In fact, Jed had a girlfriend during the show in Nashville.
If the news about Jed's girlfriend made it to Hannah, she would have kicked him as she did with another contestant during the first episode. This news led to Hannah breaking off the engagement.
