The Challenge: Female Competitors In The Running For Rookie Of The Year

Though the rookie players on The Challenge are at a distinct disadvantage each season, there were a handful of female first-time players who stepped up to the plate this year and blew fans’ minds. A wide variety of skills are required to go far in the competition on the long-running MTV reality show, and these women proved they have what it takes to play with the big dogs.

In 2021 there were two seasons—Double Agents in the first half of the year and Spies, Lies & Allies to cap off the end of the year. Though the rookies in Double Agents mostly disappointed fans, there were more who showed promise on Spies, Lies & Allies.

These competitors demonstrated a wide range of proficiencies that range from strength and endurance, to politicking, to being entertaining for viewers. Some of them have been eliminated from the competition already, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t leave a mark on fans and their fellow castmates as players who can go the distance.

Big Brother alum Amber’s debut season was Double Agents, and though the other members of her Big Brother alliance were initially seen as contenders, Amber was the one who went on to win the season with the help of her veteran partner CT Tamburello. Amber didn’t make it to the final on Spies, Lies & Allies, but her performance during her sophomore season was impressive nonetheless, and Amber has to be at the front of fans’ minds when deciding on female Rookie of the Year.

On a recent episode of Spies, Lies & Allies, the Survivor: Romania alum secured her fourth elimination win, and even “Mr. T.J.” had to give her props. Emy is an absolute beast who gives every challenge 100%—and that’s exactly what viewers love to see. From the beginning of the season, Emy demonstrated great skill at manipulating situations and building strategic alliances with veteran players. CT took Emy under his wing this season, and it’s not hard to see why he chose to coach the promising rookie.

Berna had a bit of an up and down season on Spies, Lies & Allies that included a triumphant elimination win, a showmance with veteran cast member Nelson Thomas, and a major betrayal by her partner CT. She left the show with a few vendettas, which could prompt her to return next season. Berna’s impressive athleticism made her a formidable player, but her social game could use some work. If she comes back next season, Berna has experience with how backstabbing the competition can be, and could potentially make it to a final.

Over the two seasons of The Challenge that aired this year, there were many cast members who were new to the competition, but most of those rookies washed out and probably won’t be returning on any subsequent seasons. However, there were a few who stood out above the rest and proved that they have the heart of a champion and deserve recognition.
