Warning! Spoilers ahead for Teen Titans Academy #8
In the latest issue of DC Comics' Teen Titans Academy, the students of DC's new superhero school try to bring a former Titan back from the dead (who has already been resurrected in secret). While a new school year has begun, things are certainly off to a rocky start with continued attacks from the mysterious Red X. However, it looks as though things may start to get better now that the Roy Harper Academy's namesake has returned.
In Teen Titans Academy #8 from writer Tim Sheridan and artist Mike Norton, the classic Titans-turned-teachers of the Roy Harper Academy are giving prospective students and their families a tour of the campus. Furthermore, Wally West's Flash and his kids Irey and Jai arrive seeing as how The Fastest Man Alive is considering enrolling his twins—as he was a former Titan himself. However, this provides Red X with the perfect opportunity for more torment at the Titans' expense. A mysterious foe who's secretly one of the academy's students, Red X has intimate knowledge about the Titans and how they operate, making him incredibly difficult to apprehend.
Red X decides, in this new issue, to speak directly to the tour before making yet another quick escape, calling into question the Titans' ability to keep their students safe if they can't even protect themselves. This was a reference to Heroes in Crisis where a traumatized Wally West lost control of his powers and accidentally murdered several heroes and villains who were in rehab (including former Titan Roy Harper). In the aftermath of Red X's latest appearance, some of the students get ahold of Miguel Montez' H-Dial, making modifications so they can talk to the dead. However, while they try to call the late Roy Harper to learn more about what happened, the students are all surprised to see Roy himself standing in their doorway.
While some of the students will no doubt freak out in the coming issues believing that they somehow brought Roy Harper's Arsenal back from the dead, Roy has actually been among the land of the living for some time now. As seen in Joshua Williamson's Infinite Frontier, Roy Harper was resurrected as a Black Lantern though he kept his return from the dead largely a secret. However, it seems as though Arsenal is now back for real in the pages of Teen Titans Academy having decided to return to Titans Tower while being just as confused as the students are about what's going on.
Naturally, Roy Harper's return to the DC Universe proper is very exciting and it's going to be a lot of fun to see his fellow Titans' reactions when they see him alive and well. However, one has to wonder if the Roy Harper name for the school and statue out front will change now that Arsenal has finally revealed he's been alive this whole time. Furthermore, will Roy become a teacher like the rest of the classic Titans? DC fans will just have to wait and see as Teen Titans Academy continues.
