Warning! Spoilers for Eternals #8 by Marvel Comics
After finding out the truth about the actual cost of being Eternal, Ikaris is desperate to lose the one advantage he holds over Superman. In a new preview for Eternals #8 by Marvel Comics, the powerful cosmic hero reveals that he wants to learn what it means to fear death and care about living and dying now that he's learned the shocking repercussions of using their resurrection protocol.
In the current Eternals ongoing series at Marvel Comics, Ikaris and the rest of the Eternals recently learned the shocking truth about the Great Machine and their resurrections. It turns out each time the Eternals resurrected one of their own, a process they used countless times to remain eternal, it actually ended up killing someone on Earth. That means the Eternals are inadvertedly responsible for thousands of deaths worldwide. Now, with the information at hand, Ikaris is aiming to make sure his existence isn't reliant on being unkillable - a key advantage he holds over DC's Superman.
In a brand new preview of Eternals #8 by Marvel Comics, the Eternals find themselves on Lemuria after abandoning their mainstream society. In the home of the Deviants, Ikaris ends up taking down the villains he's taken an oath to defeat. However, after Phastos tells him and Kingo they are fighting like they are forgetting their curse, Ikaris tells him he needs to learn how to fight where he cares about whether he lives to die.
The preview also features Thanos reawakening a freshly resurrected Druig. The Mad Titan recently became the Prime Eternal, meaning he has more control over the ancient race than ever before. Clearly, he doesn't mind using the Great Machine.
Ikaris and the rest of the Eternals who went to Lemuria are struggling with their existence and are refusing to use the Great Machine to resurrect themselves now that they know the devastating costs of using it. If Ikaris is now living like he has only one life and won't be resurrected after he dies, he loses his one advantage over Superman. While the Man of Steel is pretty much unkillable, he doesn't have a resurrection protocol like the Eternals to bring him back should he die. With Ikaris refusing to resurrect himself, he loses his upper hand on the powerful DC hero.
Ikaris is still an extraordinarily powerful hero in the Marvel Universe, with few others rivaling his abilities. However, by refusing to be resurrected and living his current life as if it's his last, he's making himself more vulnerable than ever. In the process, his advantage over Superman is gone. Eternals #8 by Marvel Comics is in stores on Wednesday.
