Spider-Man has finally swung into Marvel’s Avengers, and the PlayStation player response has so far been positive. Crystal Dynamics revealed the friendly neighborhood web-slinger of comic and movie fame would be coming to Marvel’s Avengers as a PlayStation-exclusive DLC character before the game was even released last August, and the Spider-Man: With Great Power event launched Tuesday alongside the new Marvel’s Avengers Klaw Raid: Discordant Sound mission.
Spider-Man’s Marvel’s Avengers story content plays out differently than past DLC heroes like Black Panther and Kate Bishop. I stead of a full story campaign, it's told through unlockable cutscenes and missions in the Avengers Initiative multiplayer mode rather. The Spider-Man: With Great Power Hero Event sees a version of Peter Parker in his early 20s join forces with the Avengers to uncover a hidden plot by A.I.M., and pre-release promotional material featured Spidey hanging out with Ms. Marvel and Black Widow between missions. Players are also able to unlock a variety of alternate Spider-Man outfits in Marvel’s Avengers, ranging from his classic Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Armor costumes to suit paying homage to his comic book backstory.
With Spider-Man now playable in the PlayStation versions of Marvel’s Avengers, The Gamer reports players are finding themselves pleasantly surprised with how the iconic hero plays. Andrekensei admittedly had low expectations for Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers but was ultimately impressed by how "fast, fun, and fluid” the character's web-swinging transversal gameplay is - even going far as to call it the best in the game aside from flying as Iron Man or Thor. Fortnoir_ shared these sentiments, in addition to praising Spidey’s updated Iconic Suit as an original design which still stays true to the character viewers know and love. Finally, freddyste92 simply welcomed Spidey to Marvel’s Avengers with a screenshot of the hero literally hanging out with the Avengers in the game’s main menu.
Not everyone has been on board with the idea of Spider-Man appearing as a PlayStation-exclusive hero in Marvel’s Avengers, especially after Insomniac’s critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man series set the bar incredibly high for games featuring Marvel’s most famous character. Even though fans are enjoying Spidey’s gameplay in Marvel’s Avengers so far, others feel it’s still a step down from his standalone PlayStation adventures. In fact, the most common complaint regarding Spider-Man’s gameplay in Marvel’s Avengers is players struggling to adjust to controlling Spidey differently than in Insomniac’s games - with a prime example being players attempting to dive after a web swing by clicking the control stick down as they could in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Marvel’s Avengers had a rocky first year since its launch last August, with publisher Square Enix reportedly losing money over the game’s poor initial sales and Marvel’s Avengers’ microtransactions being the subject of significant controversy. Still, developer Crystal Dynamics is continuing to support Marvel’s Avengers well into its second year with new characters and story content, and it looks like Spider-Man’s debut as a part of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is a success so far.
