The OnePlus Buds Z2 stand out as compelling wireless headphones for just $99, but what kind of specs can you expect for such a mid-tier price? It's no secret that true wireless earbuds are everywhere nowadays. Ever since AirPods popularized the niche in 2016, the market's been on a constant rise up. More models are coming out, additional features are being introduced, and there are more price points to choose from than ever before. Whether someone's looking to spend $20, $100, or even $300, the wireless earbud world has something to offer.
One company that's quickly asserted itself in this space is OnePlus. OnePlus started its journey with true wireless earbuds in July 2020 with the $79 OnePlus Buds. It followed these up with the $49 OnePlus Buds Z in October 2020, then again with the $149 OnePlus Buds Pro in July 2021. For its fourth model, OnePlus debuted the Buds Z2 in December 2021. The $99 retail price suggests they're pretty generic mid-tier earbuds, but thanks to an impressive spec sheet, the Buds Z2 have a lot more than meets the eye.
Right off the bat, the OnePlus Buds Z2 are extremely lightweight. The earbuds themselves weigh just 4.6g, while the charging case is 42g. They're rather compact as well. OnePlus says the earbuds measure 33 x 22.4 x 21.8mm, with the case coming in at 73.15 x 36.8 x 29.1mm. And that lightweight design is also quite practical. The Buds Z2 feature an IP55 dust/water resistance rating for ample protection throughout daily use. The case also has its own IPX4 rating to keep it safe from light splashes.
On the audio front, the OnePlus Buds Z2 tout 11mm dynamic drivers with a frequency response range between 20 and 20,000Hz. They also feature a 98dB driver sensitivity, 16Ω impedance, and have Dolby Atmos support. Another big feature of the Buds Z2 is active noise-canceling. ANC on the Buds Z2 supports two levels — including Faint (25dB) and Extreme (40dB). The effect can also be reversed to enable Transparency Mode, allowing users to hear surrounding noises more easily.
On the Bluetooth front, the Buds Z2 have Bluetooth 5.2 with a connection range up to 10 meters. If used with a OnePlus phone, a special 'Pro Gaming Mode' reduces latency down to just 94ms. Battery life is equally impressive. With ANC turned on, the OnePlus Buds Z2 get up to 5 hours of continuous playback and up to 27 hours when including the charging case. Turn ANC off, and those numbers increase to 7 hours and 38 hours, respectively. As for charging, the case has a USB-C port that delivers 5 hours of listening time after being plugged in for just 10 minutes.
Then there are all of the miscellaneous specs. The Buds Z2 have 3 MEMS microphones that "work together to filter out unwanted noise and ensure your voice is heard loud and clear." The earbuds also have capacitive playback controls, in-ear wearing detection, a mono mode for both the left and right buds, and Google Fast Pair support on Android devices. All in all, it's a huge loadout of features for not that much cash. If $99 is how much you're looking to spend on a pair of earbuds, the OnePlus Buds Z2 are certainly worth putting on the shortlist.
