The Flash: Ben Affleck Says It’s Possible George Clooney Returns as Batman

Ben Affleck says it's possible, but unlikely, that George Clooney returns as Batman in The Flash. Clooney had a short-lived stint as Batman after replacing Val Kilmer as the Caped Crusader. Clooney starred as Bruce Wayne alongside Chris O'Donnell in 1997's Batman & Robin, which is often considered one of the worst Batman movies to date. Christian Bale would put on the cowl next for Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, followed by Affleck in the DCEU and Robert Pattinson in the upcoming The Batman.

Keaton is considered a fan-favorite Batman, having appeared in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman and its sequel, Batman Returns, in 1992. After 30 years, the actor is returning to the DC universe and is set to appear in The Flash next year. Zack Snyder's Justice League was thought to be Affleck's final outing as Batman, but it was announced in August 2020 that he too would be playing Batman in The Flash. With two actors returning as Bruce Wayne in The Flash, many have wondered if Kilmer, Clooney, Bale, or possibly even Pattinson could appear in the DC movie as well.

Affleck briefly talked about that possibility in a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live (via Comicbook). About halfway through the interview, The Flash was brought up, with Affleck saying he doesn't believe Clooney is in the movie. He claims Clooney may secretly be in the film if he's heavily guarded, explaining that he never saw Keaton while filming his scenes. Affleck's full quote can be read below:

"He definitely would blow it. Which is why I can tell you now, I don't believe he is [in the movie]. If he is, he hasn't told me, so maybe he thinks I'd blow it. It's possible. He may be very guarded. As far as I know, he didn't want to return to that height of cowl ears, but I don't believe he's in The Flash. But I didn't even see Michael Keaton."

While it looks like Clooney won't be appearing in The Flash, his comment about Keaton could possibly have revealed story details. It's unknown how big of a role Affleck will have in The Flash, but it's believed The Flash could kill off Affleck's Batman. This could give his version of the character a definitive ending, but Affleck not interacting with Keaton on set could mean they don't share any scenes together or team up to help The Flash. The two versions of Batman could be seen together if shots are combined in post-production, but based on Affleck's comment, the two actors may not even share the screen together.

If true, it would be disappointing not to see Affleck and Keaton together in the same scene. However, many wouldn't mind if Clooney wasn't in The Flash. With the long-standing popularity of Keaton's Batman and the current wave of appreciation for Affleck's Batman thanks to the Snyder Cut, these two versions of the Caped Crusader were the obvious choices for The FlashBatman Forever and Batman & Robin haven't aged particularly well, so if a third Batman were to return, it's more likely Bale or Pattinson would appear over Kilmer or Clooney.

It should also be noted that Clooney himself has stated that he was not asked to return for The Flash. The MCU and DCEU are notoriously tight-lipped about plot details and character reveals, so it's possible Clooney could be lying about his involvement in the movie. However, given the reasons stated above, that seems unlikely. Even if Clooney doesn't return in The Flash, two versions of Batman should be sufficient enough to tell an entertaining multiverse story.
