Nothing in the world quite beats the visual appeal of seeing a beautiful person dressed in some equally stunning clothing, The Originals had these looks in spades. Due to the long-lived nature of the Mikaelson family, they have seen the rise and fall of a great many fashions over the years.
Of course, there is the story and character development to go along with these outfits in The Originals. Elijah's suits, for example, set him apart from Klaus. They give a visual cue to the audience that Elijah is the more uptight and refined brother to Klaus' more casual and "devil may care" attire. All these outfits are simultaneously iconic along with giving audiences visual cues about the character wearing them.
Hayley Marshall's style throughout the series tended to be more practical than full-on glam, but when she did go that route she tended to go hard. In season 3 of The Originals, she ends up joining Elijah at the Strix Gala as his date to look into the mysterious group of vampires. Hayley utterly stuns in this gorgeous, off-the-shoulder red gown. Every eye in the place is on her, and none of the audience could blame them either.
Part of the fun of fancy party episodes is to see characters getting dressed up in pretty clothing. The red dress is a fun departure from Hayley's usual mix of practical and kind of hippie clothing. Honestly, it lowkey made her look like a Disney princess.
Klaus Mikaelson usually preferred a more comfortable style of dress. When he wore a suit, however, he wore a suit. None stuns quite as much as his suit in "Tangled Up In Blue". Despite being the third episode in the first season, the all-black ensemble serves to showcase Klaus' dark nature while making him pop in the lighting of the masquerade.
In terms of chess, however, the clothing choice sets up Klaus as the Black King to Marcel's White, evidenced by his choice of a white dress shirt. While the white pieces tend to make the first move in the game, like Marcel taking over New Orleans, the black pieces make the second move. In the episode, Klaus makes a move to find someone in Marcel's inner circle to betray him.
"Tangled Up in Blue" is one of the earliest episodes of The Originals, but it turned out to be one of the most iconic in terms of fashion on the series. While Klaus's all-black suit is stunning, it doesn't hold a candle to Rebekah's gorgeous ensemble. From the lace around her neck to the beautiful black flowers in her hair, she knows how to put an outfit together in the best way.
Not only does the outfit look amazing on her, but it also symbolizes Rebekah's alliance with her brother, despite her past love with Marcel.
There is nothing more iconic than looks worn in a fancy dress episode. Like, of course, the characters' day-to-day wear is important, but it's the images of gorgeous dresses and perfect suits that will stay in audiences' minds. At the Strix Gala, Marcel Gerard shows that he knows how to wear a tuxedo to devastating effect.
The cool, collected air that the tuxedo lands Marcel does not waver in the slightest as he hunts down his daylight ring in order to become a member of the Strix. It also showcases Marcel's unflappable calm when he goes against Mohinder in a fight to the death and doesn't even get that ruffled in the process.
Freya rocked with a sort of rocker aesthetic during The Originals. She wore a lot of dark colors, leather, and shaggy hair. She looked really good in it. Yet, it's her slightly softer aesthetic during her wedding in season 5 that will remain in viewers' minds. Her off-the-shoulder dress had a lot of laceworks to give a sort of crochet feeling. It definitely feels like something that Stevie Nicks would have worn back in the day, which is right in line with Freya's sense of style.
More importantly, it symbolizes the softer and more romantic feelings that she has with Keelin. This is a princess moment for Freya complete with a circlet, who has been through absolute torment and has more than earned her happy ending. If anyone deserves feeling like they're in a fairytale where good wins, then it's definitely Freya Mikaelson.
The day-to-day outfits on The Originals for most of the characters were very much the same: jeans, t-shirts with short or long sleeves, and boots. While the practicality makes sense given the area of the show's setting, it doesn't really make for an iconic look. Elijah Mikaelson, however, is immediately distinctive amongst the core cast due to his suits, which he consistently wore across The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.
Not only does Elijah look good in the suits, but they also serve to inform his character. Unlike Klaus, who wears more casual clothing, Elijah's suits are meant to showcase him as the more reserved and moral member of the Mikaelson family. While his brother is often like a child throwing a tantrum when he doesn't get his way, Elijah looks and acts more like an adult.
