Bradley Cooper has revealed that he has no interest in directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Cooper currently plays Rocket Raccoon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his film A Star Is Born will be the beginning of his directing career.
The Guardians of the Galaxy made their comic book debut back in January 1969 in Marvel Super-Heroes #18. The team has varied over the years seeing many characters come and go, but the 2014 film, Guardians of the Galaxy, was based on the team that was introduced in 2008. This team consisted of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Quasar, Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, and Groot. All of these characters have, of course, been in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, except for Quasar and Adam Warlock (not including Warlock's mid-credits tease). A third film was in development, but things became complicated after James Gunn was fired this past summer. Since Gunn's firing, Disney has been searching for a director to replace him and has since put the third film on indefinite hold.

When an interviewer at JOE asked Cooper if Disney had offered him a seat in the director's chair or if he would even be interested, Cooper replied, "In directing it? I could never direct anything that I didn't write. No, I could never direct anything that I didn't write." Sean Gunn recently confirmed that Disney would be using his brother's script for the movie, which means that Cooper not directing the film is almost a certainty.
Cooper isn't the first director to shoot down the opportunity to direct the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Paul Feig also announced that he has no desire to direct. Even though Feig and Cooper have made public announcements about not directing the film, other filmmakers are rumored to be involved with the project. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is currently rumored to be the frontrunner to take over Gunn's spot, but nothing official has been announced just yet.
Even though Cooper's first crack at directing is already starting Oscar talk for A Star Is Born, he was never really a candidate for directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Given that he has only directed one film, Disney probably wouldn't want to extend an offer to Cooper given his lack of experience when it comes to directing, and then there's the fact that he (and many directors, for that matter) would want creative control over the story. Cooper might one day direct a Marvel or Disney movie, but for now, he will just have to play the loneliest Guardian in the entire galaxy thanks to Thanos.
