Brie Larson Reveals What Sets Captain Marvel Apart From Other MCU Movies

Brie Larson believes the emotional weight of Captain Marvel is what sets it apart from other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Next year will finally bring Marvel Studios' first female-led movie to theaters, and they've found an Oscar-winner to help make that possible. Larson will lead Captain Marvel as former pilot-turned-Kree warrior Carol Danvers as a Starforce member. Marvel officially unveiled the first look at Larson in her super suit today, but that was only the beginning of the news.

Plenty of new details and images for Captain Marvel are now available, and each piece continues to offer a better look at the film. There's plenty of excitement built-in with Captain Marvel being Marvel's first leading lady, and anyone familiar with Larson's work knows she has what it takes to anchor the blockbuster. However, the star believes that the personal, emotional center of Captain Marvel is what will make it different, not its intergalactic battles or shapeshifting villains.

Speaking to EW as part of their Captain Marvel coverage, she shared her thoughts on what makes her movie unique. Larson is very impressed with the dramatic elements the film is factoring in most of all. There will be the standard humor and action, but it's Captain Marvel's ability to show all of these aspects that makes her most excited.

"That is something that is really exciting to me about this film: We did not cut corners on that stuff. Like, when it’s funny, it is funny, but also when there’s deep emotional things happening, it’s real. So I was able to bring some of those same things that I’ve brought to full dramatic roles into this, which I’m really proud of because I think it will really set this film apart."

Whether it was her role in Short Term 12 or her Oscar-winning turn in Room, Larson's ability as a lead cannot be questioned. While no one is saying Captain Marvel is going to be an Oscar-worthy drama, the freedom to explore those elements within the larger blockbuster may be all it needs. If Larson can turn in a performance anywhere close to what she's shown in the past with these deep emotional scenes, then those moments could truly set Captain Marvel apart.

This is just the latest update to come from Captain Marvel but it won't be the last. EW is rolling out more info for the rest of the week. They've already revealed it isn't an origin story for Carol, as she's already left Earth when the movie begins. She will return to her home planet thanks to the threat of Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull warlord Talos. There are plenty of updates yet to come, so, hopefully, some can shed some light on how the movie will achieve these dramatic elements Larson refers to. Either way, she's certainly doing her part to continue to hype up Captain Marvel.
