Chucky the killer doll gets a facelift in the first look image from Orion Pictures and MGM's reboot of the Child's Play horror movie franchise. The film only just began production this week, with Norwegian director Lars Klevberg calling the shots from a screenplay by Sleeping Dogs and Quantum Break video game writer Tyler Burton Smith.
The original Child's Play was released in 1988 and put an... unusual twist on the slasher formula - making its killer a children's doll, possessed by the spirit of the murderous Charles "Chucky" Lee Ray (Brad Dourif). Following the cult success of the first movie, the Child's Play films began to move further and further into horror-comedy territory by embracing the innate ridiculousness of both their premise and the Chucky character himself. Don Manicini has scripted all seven installments so far and even directed the most recent three (including, 2017's Cult of Chucky), but isn't creatively involved with the reboot.

Aubrey Plaza (Legion) stars in the Child's Play reboot as a mother who gives her son (Lights Out's Gabriel Bateman) the evil doll in question, "unaware of its more sinister nature" (as the official plot synopsis puts it). Check out the photo below for your first look at the new Chucky in the film.
While a voice actor for the new Chucky has yet to be found, it's already been reported that Dourif won't be reprising the role for the Child's Play reboot. The actor and Mancini are instead focusing their efforts on getting a Child's Play TV series off the ground and running for Universal - the studio that holds the rights to everything but the first movie in the Child's Play franchise.
Klevberg and Smith, for their part, are both on the verge of making a name for themselves in the horror genre. The former previously directed the high concept horror-thriller Polaroid, which was picked up by Netflix this month in the wake of its original distributor, The Weinstein Company, collapsing last year. Meanwhile, Smith has served as a screenwriter on the Five Nights at Freddy's video game film adaptation that's currently moving forward at Blumhouse (Get Out, Split), in addition to Child's Play.
Nevertheless, the reboot still feels like a precarious venture, all the more so with neither of the main creative forces on the original Child's Play franchise (Mancini and Dourif) involved. If nothing else, though, at least Child's Play fans can take comfort in knowing that the new Chucky will (for the most part) look like his old self.
