DC Universe's Doom Patrol Casts Timothy Dalton As The Chief

Timothy Dalton joins DC Universe's Doom Patrol TV show as Dr. Niles Caulder otherwise known as The Chief. The former James Bond actor joins a growing cast for the newest DC Comics series, which already includes Brendan Fraser as Robotman, Jovian Wade as Cyborg and Alan Tudyk as season 1's villain Mr. Nobody. The cast for Doom Patrol isn't completed yet, but Dalton joining as The Chief adds a very important element.

As his name implies Dr. Niles Caulder is the de facto leader of the Doom Patrol. A brilliant scientist, The Chief gathers together the group of superpowered misfits who eventually become known as the Doom Patrol. Initially a force for good, Caulder is more than a bit unstable and has been known to turn villain, fighting against his own team on occasion. With Dalton's casting, it seems like the TV adaption will follow the same tragic path.

DC Comics announced the news of Dalton's casting as Niles Caulder. Dalton will be a series regular in the upcoming show, which will be exclusive to DC's streaming platform, DC Universe. While comic fans are aware of Niles Caulder from the comics, Dalton's casting comes with its own character description. It reads:

Dr. Caulder is a pioneer in medical science, searching the world over for those on the edge of death in need of a miracle. Brilliant, but controversial, Dr. Caulder will stop at nothing to help those he believes are in need, including his collection of strange heroes known as The Doom Patrol.

Earlier rumors suggested that Doom Patrol was looking for an A-List actor to play the role of Niles Caulder. The top rumored choice at the time was Kelsey Grammer. Whether Grammer was ever really in contention or not is unknown but Dalton is some rather inspired casting. Dalton's most famous role is as the fifth cinematic James Bond. However, the actor has played a number of villainous or imposing roles in his career. He should be able to embody the moral dichotomy of The Chief quite well. This is assuming, of course, that the TV series does follow the comics and sees Caulder turn from hero to villain.

It would make sense for Doom Patrol to play with Caulder's morality and place on the team. In his character description, Jovian Wade's Cyborg was described as the hero that brings the Doom Patrol together. Cyborg's importance will undoubtedly create friction with the older Caulder. It wouldn't be much of stretch for that resentment to turn into a real vindictiveness and The Chief to go full supervillain - though that's likely a multi-season plan for Doom Patrol.

Although Dalton as The Chief likely won't appear until the series premieres, fans will get a glimpse of the Doom Patrol before the series launches. Doom Patrol is a spin-off of DC Universe's biggest launching series Titans. Titans will introduce Doom Patrol in episode five of their first season. April Bowlby, who plays Doom Patrol's Elasti-Woman, has been confirmed to appear on both series.
