Disney Submits Black Panther For All Awards Categories Including Best Picture

Disney submits Black Panther for consideration in all awards categories, including Best Picture. As most people know, comic book movies typically struggle to gain traction on the awards circuit, usually having to settle for a handful of crafts nominations. There have been some rare exceptions of course, like Heath Ledger's posthumous Best Supporting Actor win for The Dark Knight and Logan's surprising nod in Best Adapted Screenplay. What fans have been waiting for is a superhero film to breakthrough and earn a Best Picture nomination.

Many believe Black Panther has the goods to pull it off. Ryan Coogler's entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was widely praised when it was released this past February, earning raves for its thoughtful, relevant narrative and strong performances. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige was so impressed with the final product, he's putting together their first ever major awards campaign in an attempt to get Black Panther the recognition he feels it deserves. Now, with awards season starting to heat up, Disney has officially launched the initiative.

On Disney's official awards page, viewers can see the full list of categories the Mouse House is aiming for. In addition to the technical categories, they're gunning for the major trophies like Best Picture and Best Director.

Black Panther has managed to stay in the awards conversation for a while now, particularly after the controversy surrounding the (now delayed) Best Popular Film category. Many accused the Academy of formulating an insulting consolation prize to give Black Panther an Oscar, out of fear of disrespecting a pop culture phenomenon. Panther will certainly be hard for voters to ignore, considering its $700 million domestic gross (more than Avengers: Infinity War) and passionate fan base. Of course, taking the world by storm doesn't guarantee a Best Picture nomination (see: The Dark Knight), so it'll be interesting to see how Black Panther fares on the Oscars circuit. There are plenty of titles in contention this year, but a few festival films didn't live up to their potential - perhaps opening a path for Black Panther to secure a nod.

Outside of the technical categories, Black Panther may also have a shot in Best Supporting Actor for Michael B. Jordan. His Killmonger is considered to be one of the best villains in all of the MCU, as the actor delivered a captivating and empathetic turn. In his young career, Jordan has put together a string of memorable performances, including one in Coogler's Creed. It feels like he's building towards his first Oscar nomination. Time will tell if it's for Black Panther, but Marvel is going to put everything they have into the campaign.
