Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie dropped hints about a project he wants to develop starring Ilsa Faust actress Rebecca Ferguson. Thanks in large part to her two performances as Faust in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Ferguson has become one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. Her recently announced projects include the villain role in the forthcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, as well as a part in Denis Villeneuve's two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune.
As for her future in the Mission: Impossible franchise (more sequels seem inevitable after Fallout's huge box office performance), it seems Ferguson would be a slam-dunk to return as Faust, given how important her character has become as a sparring partner and potential romantic interest for Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. Ferguson’s Faust has become such a popular character in fact that some have suggested she should get her own spinoff film. Is there a possibility that Ilsa Faust could have life away from Ethan Hunt?

Speaking to Collider, Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie himself addressed the possibility of an Ilsa Faust spinoff movie. Unfortunately for fans of Faust, McQuarrie shot down the idea of giving the character her own film, saying he doesn’t believe any of the characters from Mission: Impossible - including Ethan Hunt himself - make sense outside of the team framework. At the same time, McQuarrie did indicate that he has an idea for a non-Mission: Impossible movie starring Rebecca Ferguson that would actually make better use of her talents.
In the interview, McQuarrie gave some hints about what the project would be. He explained that he has an idea in mind to remake an older movie that’s “flawed” but could work with some slight changes. Naturally, McQuarrie would not say which older film he wishes to remake. All he would say is that Ferguson would be perfect for the part and that it could be made for a relatively modest budget. McQuarrie says he’s pitched studios on the idea but can’t get it made. He also said it’s not a script he wrote himself.
Interestingly, McQuarrie seems totally against the idea of an Ilsa Faust spinoff movie, explaining that if you made such a film everyone would just be waiting for Ethan Hunt’s cameo. Clearly though, McQuarrie enjoys working with Ferguson and would like to extend their professional relationship, but he wants to find something for her that would let her show off her abilities beyond what she’s done as Ilsa Faust. McQuarrie calls Ferguson "a star" who people have not discovered yet, and says he's "kind of at her service."
What might McQuarrie’s mysterious Ferguson project be? It’s hard to guess based on the meager hints he’s willing to offer. However, after McQuarrie and Ferguson’s work together further building the character of Ilsa Faust in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, it’s hard not to be intrigued by the prospect of their teaming up again. In the meantime, McQuarrie continues toiling away with Tom Cruise trying to get an Edge of Tomorrow sequel going. One project he won't be taking on is Bond 25, though at one point he was rumored to be in the running for the directing gig ultimately taken by Cary Fukunaga.
