Suicide Squad 2 Writer Confirms Script is Finished

The Suicide Squad 2 script is complete, according to one of the movie's screenwriters. After officially launching their shared DC movie universe with Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in early 2016, which was a follow-up to the filmmaker's 2013 Man of Steel movie, Warner Bros. opted to quickly expand their newly-formed franchise with David Ayer's Suicide Squad later that summer. While it was critically panned, the film became an astounding financial success, and it showed that people were interested in these characters.

So, WB decided to place most of their cards on developing direct spinoffs and various other offshoots of Suicide Squad, with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn headlining the bulk of those projects. Jared Leto's Joker is another character that is being positioned to lead future installments as well, but WB is focused more on producing Todd Phillips' Joker origin movie with Joaquin Phoenix first. As for the rest of Task Force X, the studio is still keen on developing a sequel, but it has hit a few snags along the way. But, that doesn't mean it has been forgotten.

In an interview with Discussing Film, Suicide Squad 2 co-screenwriter Todd Stashwick confirms that their draft of the screenplay has been completed, saying, "We have finished our draft and I’m really proud of it." While he refrained from revealing any details about the plot or characters that it will include, he did note that it is very much a sequel to the first movie, thus meaning that WB isn't looking at the new movie as a quasi-reboot of the team, trying to stray away from earlier DCEU films.

It's safe to assume that the majority of main characters from the first Suicide Squad movie will return, and that it will take place after the events of Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey movie, featuring Robbie's Harley Quinn, which is one of the next projects DC Films is looking to put into production in 2019. If that's the case, then there's at least something comic book fans can glean from this news, but it's important to note that the actual story can change between now and release, since this is merely one script draft.

Gavin O'Connor has currently signed on to direct Suicide Squad 2 - which will be based on a script he co-wrote with Stashwick and David Bar Katz - but it's unclear when the movie will finally start filming. It was reportedly scheduled to roll cameras this fall, but that no longer seems to be the case, unless, of course, the studio accepts the current script and fast-tracks production for later this year. But that's something fans will just have to wait and see.
