Swamp Thing TV Show: Len Wiseman To Direct Pilot [Updated]

[UPDATE: Len Wiseman is now confirmed to direct the Swamp Thing pilot!]

DC Universe's live-action Swamp Thing TV show seems to be getting ready to shoot, with a new rumor indicating that Underworld creator Len Wiseman will direct the pilot episode. Along with Titans and Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing will be one of the key attractions on DC Comics and Warner Bros.' new subscription service, which will also include animated series and a selection of both classic and recent comic books.

Earlier this summer there was a rumor that Aquaman director James Wan would co-direct the Swamp Thing pilot along with veteran TV director Deran Serafian, but Wan's representatives quickly debunked that rumor. Now, however, it seems that another director with horror movie experience has been lined up for the show.

According to Splash Report, "multiple sources" are claiming that Len Wiseman has been tapped to direct the pilot episode of Swamp Thing. While this is just rumor at this point, it does make sense given that Wiseman previously directed the pilot episodes of Lucifer, Sleepy Hollow, Hawaii Five-0, and ABP, as well as the second episode of The Gifted, and was an executive producer on all of those shows. The report doesn't add any further details, save for reiterating that the show is expected to begin filming this fall in Wilmington, NC. Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman wrote the pilot's script and will serve as showrunners.

UPDATE: Deadline is now confirming that Wiseman will direct the Swamp Thing pilot, in addition to executive producing the series. This will be part of Wiseman's overall deal to produce and develop projects for WBTV.

Wiseman is best known for co-creating the Underworld movie franchise and for directing the first two entries, Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. He also directed Die Hard 4.0, and is attached to direct a prequel/sequel movie called Die Hard Year One, which will explore John McClane's life as a cop prior to that fateful night at Nakatomi Plaza. Wiseman is familiar with adapting comic books for TV, and as such would be a pretty solid choice to direct the Swamp Thing pilot.

Created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, Swamp Thing made his debut in the pages in DC Comics in the 1970s. The character was created when Alec Holland, a scientist, ran into a swamp to douse the flames on his body when a bomb exploded in his lab. The swamp then created a life form - a sentient, humanoid plant with Alec's memories, which has the ability to commune with and control plant life. It's a tricky character to pull off in an adaptation, but if DC Universe's Swamp Thing proves to be a success, it could be a major draw for the new subscription service.
