Tom Holland In Talks To Star In Sam Mendes' WWI Drama 1917

Spider-Man star Tom Holland is in talks to take on the lead role in 1917, a World War I drama from Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes. Holland is currently hard at work shooting Spider-Man: Far From Home, the follow-up to 2017’s blockbuster Spider-Man: Homecoming. Holland’s Peter Parker also appeared, to memorably tragic effect, in 2018’s mega-smash Avengers: Infinity War.

Before seeing his career soar to new heights thanks to Spider-Man, Holland made his first major impression playing Lucas in J.A. Bayona’s 2012 tsunami drama The Impossible. In 2013, Holland starred alongside Saoirse Ronan in the sci-fi thriller How I Live Now. In 2015 he worked for Ron Howard in the ocean-going epic In the Heart of the Sea, then went on to appear in James Gray’s 2017 period adventure film The Lost City of Z.

It appears Holland’s next project will see him once again traveling back to the past in the hands of a big-name director. As reported by THS, Holland is in talks to take on the lead role in Sam Mendes’ World War I film 1917. Details on Holland’s character are not yet known. Plot details on the film are also being kept under wraps. Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners is producing the project with Universal handling distribution.

Having exited the James Bond franchise after directing the hit films Skyfall and Spectre, Mendes will now turn his hand to historical drama with 1917. Mendes penned the movie’s script together with Penny Dreadful writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Mendes and Wilson-Cairns also worked together on the script for The Voyeur’s Motel, another upcoming project Mendes has been announced to direct. Mendes won the Best Director Oscar for his 2000 drama American Beauty, which also claimed the Best Picture prize that year, before going on to successfully helm two installments of the James Bond franchise.

After suffering through the brutality of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Holland looks like he’s ready to now take on the meat grinder of World War I. As tragic as Infinity War may have been for many MCU characters, the fantasy carnage of that movie can’t hold a candle to the real nightmare that was The Great War, the conflict that gripped the world from 1914 - 1918 and claimed an estimated 20 million lives. Of course, Holland still has plenty of less weighty fare lined up as well, including the next Spider-Man movie as well as an anticipated return appearance in Avengers 4 (it remains to be seen how exactly Spider-Man and the other deceased MCU characters will be resurrected). Holland also stars alongside Daisy Ridley in the upcoming YA sci-fi movie Chaos Walking.
