The Venom movie rating and runtime have possibly been revealed. Most comic book adaptations aim for the four-quadrant-friendly classification of PG-13, but there have been some notable outliers. In recent years, both Deadpool and Logan proved that R-rated takes on the material could be viable - from both a critical and commercial perspective. With Sony looking to launch their own superhero franchise drawing from the various Marvel characters they own the rights to, many were curious to see what direction they'd go in.
An anti-hero like Venom certainly lends to a more adult-orientated spin, especially since the film is not part of Sony and Marvel Studios' groundbreaking deal that allowed Spider-Man into the MCU. However, last month it was reported Sony executives were targeting a PG-13 rating in order to make a potential future crossover with Marvel easier. The matter has since become confusing for fans, especially since Venom director Ruben Fleischer didn't know what would happen. Now, Venom's rating has been confirmed.

The page for the film on the AMC Theaters website says Venom is PG-13 and runs 112 minutes. It should be noted the MPAA has not officially rated Venom yet, so it's possible this information is simply a placeholder until the actual details come out. Screen Rant has contacted Sony and will update this post accordingly.

Even though the marketing materials for Venom depict the titular character explaining in graphic detail how he is going to kill his victims, a PG-13 rating does make sense for the film. Sony has a lot riding on its success, and the last thing they'd want to do is limit its potential audience. Outside of the surprise Jumanji reboot, Sony doesn't have much in the way of viable tentpoles, and they're hoping they can ride the superhero wave after previous failed attempts (namely, the defunct Amazing Spider-Man universe). The studio is hoping to produce other films revolving around characters such as Silver Sable, Black Cat, Jackpot, Nightwatch, and others. That's only going to happen if Venom is a hit.
Fortunately for Sony, it looks like Venom is poised to be the blockbuster they need. The film is currently projected to break Gravity's all-time October opening weekend record by grossing between $60-70 million in its first three days. Of course, those estimates are still early and can easily fluctuate over the next few weeks before Venom premieres. The word-of-mouth could alter the movie's commercial prospects, so it'll be interesting to see what type of reviews it receives. If Venom turns out to be a solid comic book movie (or even Certified Fresh), Sony can rest easy knowing they have a bona fide franchise on their hands.
