Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg says the romance between Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is "central" to the movie's story. In the comic books, there was no character more affected by Jean Grey's transformation into the Dark Phoenix than Cyclops.
Earlier this week, Fox released the first trailer for Dark Phoenix, the first film in the series to totally drop the "X-Men" name from its title. The film, which is another adaptation of the comic book storyline, "The Dark Phoenix Saga", will see Professor X (James McAvoy) and his team of X-Men faced with a new challenge when a mission in space has catastrophic consequences for Jean Grey. When Jean comes in contact with a cosmic force that turns her into the Dark Phoenix, the X-Men will have no choice but to fight one of their own.

In an interview with Empire, Kinberg confirms that Cyclops and Jean Grey will be romantically involved in the film and talks about the love story's importance not only in the comics and the cartoons, but in Dark Phoenix as well. Kinberg also sheds light on how Cyclops will factor into the plot in regards to Jean's transformation.
As Jean starts to become more unstable, there are people in the X-Men who don’t think she can be helped and saved, many of whom think the world and others need helping and saving from her. And so Scott is probably the most prominent person who’s holding on to the hope that Jean can be saved.
Kinberg acknowledges that one major element in most versions of the story, Wolverine, isn't present in the film. In past stories, Wolverine is on the team of X-Men that fights the Phoenix and feels unrequited love for Jean Grey. Jean is attracted to Wolverine, but always remains loyal to Cyclops.
It appears that the movie will draw a great deal from the comics in terms of the relationship between Cyclops and Jean. Cyclops was deeply conflicted by what was happening to Jean and remained determined to save her. Kinberg's comments suggest that it may be Cyclops who has the best chance of saving Jean. The trailer shows that the Phoenix Force will make her unstable to a point where it will be difficult for the X-Men to reason with her. Jessica Chastain's mysterious alien shapeshifter will manipulate Jean for her own gains, and could succeed in turning her against her teammates. The trailer indicates that Jean's relationship with Professor X, someone she's always had close ties with, has now been damaged for unknown reasons. If this is the case, there may be no one left but Cyclops who can get through to Jean and in so doing save them all from the Phoenix Force.
